We are winding down My Father’s World Kindergarten. We finished the B is for Butterfly unit before Christmas. My goal was to be completely finished before Christmas, but that did not happen. At this point, I doubt we will finish before baby #4 is born in late January. I’m ok with that since we started it early. I have debated starting Ambleside Online Year 1 with Bug after we finish MFW. I’m just not sure if I want to wait until the fall to start, or if we will go ahead and start sometime in the spring. I think I am the most indecisive person when it comes to homeschool plans!
B is for Butterfly – My Father’s World Kindergarten
We had a good time reading about butterflies. We are waiting until the spring to actually order our caterpillars to watch them turn into butterflies. Here’s a look at a few of the great books we got from the library.
I think my favorite part of this unit was learning about the butterfly life cycle. Sometimes when I teach my six-year-old boy I get frustrated and wonder if he is even listening to me. He is a typical kid. He likes to bounce around and would rather actually do something than bookwork. I often let him build LEGOs or play with Lincoln Logs while I read. I made a sheet for him to illustrate the butterfly life cycle and had him complete it without my help. He did a wonderful job all on his own and I felt reassured as a homeschool mom that he is indeed learning.
Another project we did was paint a butterfly. I drew a large outline of a butterfly on the back of a paper sack and let the kids paint it however they want. We talked about symmetry, but they were more interested in their own designs. We late cut out the butterflies and used them when we acted out the story of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
Next up is the Frog unit! Woo hoo! We are nearing the finish line!
