Ah, it’s time to do another blogging report. This month I’m going to talk about my March 2016 blogging goals, and give you all the dirt on what happened in February.
First, let’s take a look at February’s goals.
Continue posting at least 3x a weekI’ve managed to keep up with this goal! Fully set up my content upgradeI tested a content upgrade in conjunction with my eBook, which I will explain in a bit. Continue writing the eBook I have plannedFinished my free eBook Add more items to my store. I set up a store this month. I plan to sell printables and my eBooks. Continue sending out weekly newsletters. Research ways to grow traffic. There are A LOT of resources for sale out there promising to help grow pageviews. I honestly do not know what is worth investing in and what isn’t.I ended up investing in two resources that I’m hoping will help me grow.
Page views were down a bit. January is a bit of a better month for me than February.
I would like to call February the month of disappointment. While I was disappointed, I think I learned a lot. First of all, I was introduced to a free eBook titled Reader Magnets by Nick Stephenson. It was recommended by Money Saving Mom. In the eBook, Nick talks about writing a free eBook and putting it on Amazon, permanently free, to draw in readers and gain email subscribers. He recommended placing two “ads” in the freebie. The ads would offer something else for free in exchange for an email address.
I had been tossing around the idea of turning my once-a-month grocery shopping series into an eBook for my subscribers. So, I decided to go ahead and compile the book and offer it for free here on my site and on Amazon. There was no catch. Inside the book I had two “ads,” or content upgrades, that basically let readers know I had a small printable pack that went along with the book. They could get the pack by signing up for my email list.
Oh, my goodness. I put the book together, formatted for Kindle (which had a bit of a learning curve), and made a PDF, and then launched it. I had a few thousand “sales” of the eBook, but the very few reviews I got on Amazon ended up being pretty awful. In the very first review, a woman called me out for having content upgrades in the book. She was not happy about it and apparently other people weren’t either because they rated her review as helpful. Someone else thought the book wasn’t substantial enough. (It was 22 pages, step-by-step how I do once-a-month grocery shopping), I laughed at that. This book was totally free and based off of a popular series on my blog. While I know bad reviews are par for the course, I was disappointed in the email sign-ups. I did gain a few dozen, but not enough for me to keep the book with the bad reviews on Amazon.
I have since taken the book off of Amazon, updated and revised it, and it is only available to my subscribers.
Other things I did in February:
I purchased the Skyrocket Blog Pageviews Using Google Analytics from the Learn to Blog girls. There’s a lot of information in this book, and I am going through it and doing the challenges almost every day. I think maybe it’s a bit too early to tell if anything is working. I have managed to get the bounce rate on my very top post below 70%, so that’s a good thing.
The last course I plan to take for a while is the Brilliant Pin Promotion Course from the Brilliant Business Moms. I’m slowly going through the course. I’ve learned a lot about what makes a pin a good pin, and I’ve been redesigning my pins in this format. Pinterest changed its algorithm in February. I think that’s part of why my traffic is down. Followers are growing substantially, but repins and clicks are down by over 20%. 🙁
February 2016 Income and Expenses
The spreadsheet I have been using to keep up with my expenses this year disappeared from my Google docs. I don’t know what’s going on, so I really need to start over. I think I’m going to start reporting income that I actually get paid, instead of expected income.
Other than being paid for the sponsored posts I wrote in January, I did not get paid anything else. I also had no sponsored posts written in February. I did make money with ads and affiliates, but won’t see that money until sometime in March, hopefully!
Income – $355 (sponsored posts from last month)
Canva – $6.00
BoardBooster – $5.00
Education – Skyrocket eBook – $14.99 Brilliant Pin Promotion – $75
Total expenses – $100.99

If you’re a fellow blogger, how are you doing with your goals?
