Real Life Homeschool – A Flexible Homeschool Schedule

I’m so excited to be participating in the Schoolhouse Review Crew’s Real Life Homeschool blog hop! This week I will give you a glimpse into our real life homeschool. It’s not always easy or pretty, but it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful lifestyle. First up we are going to talk about our “typical” schedule.
I keep our schedule flexible. My children are 6, 4, 2, and 2 months. There is no way I could plan our day hour by hour with so many littles. I would just get frustrated because we would always be behind! Instead, I have a general order to our day. Here we go!
A Flexible Homeschool Schedule
7 a.m. – We all get up. I’m usually awake earlier with the baby, but then everyone else gets up around this time. I have my coffee and the kids eat breakfast.
9ish – We all get dressed and I start chores for the day. This usually means tidying the kitchen because I was too tired the night before. The kids will usually play a computer game during this time. Then, we start laundry.
10 – School time. This is when I get the bulk of our schoolwork done with my oldest two. Usually, this also means trying to corral my toddler and calm my newborn. Sometimes, it gets really hectic! If it’s nice out, we will go outside to play, too.
Noon – Lunch time! I also let the kids watch an educational program on TV.
1 p.m. – Read-aloud time. We are working on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory right now. Baby naps in his swing a lot these days.
1:30 ish – Quiet time for everyone. All kids go to their rooms to nap or do a quiet activity.
3 ish – Outside to play again, or we may do an art project!
4:30 – I like to start getting dinner prepared at this time. No matter what ends up happening, I gotta start dinner!
5:30 – Dinner, Daddy time, bath, bed!
All of the times are approximate. Sometimes my schedule goes completely out the window. And that’s okay! All of my kids are so young that school time does not take up that much time. Our goals are to play and read and learn in the everyday.

Thank you for posting this…your schedule seems similar to mine in several ways. One big difference is that I have 2 high schoolers (15 & 17) who go to public school and 2 elementary (6 & 7) who also attend public school right now. I am homeschooling my 12 year old with special needs (who often insists that he doesn’t need to do his work) and I have a 1 & 3 year old at home who also insist on doing ‘school work’. I will be homeschooling the 6 & 7 year olds this next school year too so I know life will get crazy around here but I have faith that we will find a good routine. This has been quite a learning experience as I just started homeschooling in January but we are all loving it! I have been tweaking as I go and have found that if we have some learning dvds mixed in with the written work they all do so much better. We don’t get ‘started’ until 9 or 10ish but do chores and other things before school work… as when we first started I really struggled with keeping my house clean and my other household duties as well as helping my other kids with their needs. Life has been hectic with so many kids in the house and one child graduating but it gets done and we all have fun. Sometimes I feel like I am not doing it ‘right’ but this has encouraged me and I see that there is no ‘right’ way for every situation but it just needs to work for your family. Thank you!

I really enjoyed reading about your schedule. I just realized that our quiet time has totally disappeared. I think I am going to find it, and try to sneak it back in 🙂 My girls are older, but sometimes I still need a moment. Thanks for sharing!
