Five Simple Alphabet Activities for Preschoolers

One of the first things I wanted to learn to do as a homeschool mom was to teach the alphabet. The problem was, I wasn’t entirely sure how to do it. Do I drill my child with flashcards? Do I point out random letters? Is there a fun way I can teach my child his ABCs? I think one of the best ways for a child to learn his alphabet is through play. After all, Charlotte Mason even says if given a box of letters a child will learn them on his own. We like to make things fun around our house, so today I’m sharing five simple alphabet activities for preschoolers or kindergartners. These are low-prep, low-stress activities!

ABC Activities for Preschoolers

Let’s start with one of the easiest activities, but my kids seem to love it. Do-A-Dot pages! I simply printed off some free do-a-dot letter pages, gave my kiddos some do-a-dot markers, and let them fill in the letters. I started with the first letter of my son’s name. I simply said, “Can you guess what letter this is? It’s an I! You know what starts with I? Isaac!”

If you don’t have do-a-dot markers you can use round stickers.

The next game we love to play is ABC hop scotch. You’ll need some sidewalk chalk and a concrete area. Write the first letter of the alphabet, then a random letter, then the second letter of the alphabet, then another random letter and so on.

Have your child jump on each letter in ABC order, saying each letter as he hops on it. If he hops on the wrong letter, have him go back to the last letter and try again!

Another fun game to play with sidewalk chalk is Spray the Letter. Write some letters on the concrete and call out one letter or sound at a time. Let your child spray it with an inexpensive spray bottle of water!

Missing letters is a fun game to play. You’ll need a sheet of printer paper, a marker, a set of alphabet letters, and if using magnetic letters a cookie sheet is nice to have. I got mine at the Dollar Tree.

Simply write the alphabet on the paper, but leave out a few letters. See if your child can fill in the missing letters!

This activity is called Secret Letters. You need a sheet of paper, a white crayon, and some watercolors. Write some letters on the white paper with the white crayon. Let your child paint over the letters and see which letters are revealed! This works best with light colors. Talk about which letters have appeared. You can name them and talk about their sounds.
