When I had Bug, I did everything conventionally. He got formula and jarred baby food. I even bought him those pretty gross graduate meals (though he didn’t eat them). I thought about making homemade baby food, but as a new mom I felt intimidated. I didn’t trust myself. I let marketing and the influence of what everyone else I knew was doing lead the way.

I did dabble in making baby food for Sis, but she just wasn’t having it! That baby breastfed for nearly 2 years, but went straight to table and finger foods at around 10 months old.

Baby O is now six months old and he is so interested in food. So, I got myself into the kitchen and decided to make homemade baby food. You won’t believe how easy it is!

Before you start feeding your baby solids, you need to make sure he is ready. I was surprised that even my pediatrician recommended waiting until six months to introduce solids. That’s a definite change because when Bug was a baby the same pediatrician recommended four months. I have found that six months is really best in my personal experience.

Each baby is different. My oldest started eating solids at four months and devoured them. My middle child wanted nothing to do with baby food. She pretty much went straight to table food at 10 months old (while continuing to nurse). With Baby O I held off until 6 months and he is very interested in eating baby food.

Here are the signs that let me know my baby was ready for his first solids.

  • Able to sit unsupported.
  • Reaching for others plates/forks/spoons.
  • Smacking lips while others are eating.
  • Interested in sippy cups, baby bowls, and spoons.

If your baby is at the 6 month mark, you can at least try. If baby isn’t ready, he will let you know. My daughter wouldn’t eat more than a bite or two.

What Food Should I Feed My Baby First?

avacado and banana - baby's first solid foods

Avocado and banana make excellent first foods for baby. They don’t require any cooking from you, which also means you need to serve them fresh to your baby every time, but that makes them super easy.

All you do is break off a chunk of either avocado or banana, mash it with a fork, and stir until it gets soupy. You may need to add a little water to thin it further.

And that’s it! Feed your baby small bites. He may spit them out at first, but you can generally tell whether your baby is accepting the food or if he’s just not ready. It’s definitely a trial and error process!
