It’s Day 4 of the 5 Days of Homeschool Essentials blog hop! Whew! We are moving right along! Today I am going to tell you about something we use in our homeschool every day that makes things just a little bit easier. I’m going to tell you about our Kindle Fire homeschool uses. Now our Kindle Fire wears a pink case and entertains kids at the most opportune times. While I love my Kindle Fire, this post could probably be about any tablet as long as you can use a Kindle app.
Free Books
The main reason I love my Kindle Fire is that I can get free books directly from the Kindle store and have them instantly on my Kindle. We are planning to use Ambleside Online next year and many of the required readings are books that can be found for free in the Kindle store. It’s so awesome to have all of that right at your fingertips. All of the public domain books are right there, free for you. I have also found several free children’s books just by doing searches. The kids enjoy flipping through the pictures. Here’s a look at a few of the free books we will be reading next year:
The Burgess Bird Book for Children
Pinocchio The Tale of a Puppet
Peter and Wendy
The King of the Golden River
The Blue Fairy Book
And I read My Father’s Dragon to the kids last year for free on my Kindle!
I also get a lot of free books for myself! I watch sites like freehomeschooldeals.com for Free Book Fridays to find all of the great books that are free for the weekend and interest me. I’ve picked up homeschooling, budgeting, and frugal living books by doing this!
Apps
I also love apps. There are lots of apps to choose from. We mostly download free kids’ games and educational apps. We love puzzle apps like Caillou’s House of Puzzles, and a certain app called iStoryBooks if the kids want a book read to them and for some reason I cannot physically read to them at that particular time. You can find free phonics games and other apps for your preschooler or kindergarten student. There are lots of paid apps, too, but we have not explored those much. My children also love regular games like Angry Birds and a game called Doctor X Med School in which they get to care for a patient.
The other apps that I love on my Kindle Fire are the Netflix and Pandora apps. I love that we can watch all of our favorite educational programs right on the Kindle. My oldest loves music, so we will also listen to Pandora on the Kindle when we are doing our music time.
Having my Kindle Fire handy is so nice!

We just got a Kindle Fire in the fall before Christmas – haven’t used it much yet for school but I imagine we will be using it soon.
It’s awesome for school! I love the free books!
I absolutely love the Kindle Fire. We have a total of four now, and someone is always using one!
Awesome! I so need a Kindle Fire- we use a Nook in our homeschool and it’s been a huge blessing, but we don’t get as many free books!!
