How To Get Your Kids Excited About Quiet Time – Quiet Time Activities

“Tell me a story, Mama!” I hear this from my kids every day. One of my favorite things to do in the entire world is sit with my kids while they lie in bed and tell them an exciting story. My daughter loves to hear stories of brave knights and princesses, while my oldest son is a fan of funny stories about animals. While I love bedtime stories, the kids’ quiet time is also my downtime.  That’s why I am so very glad we have discovered Heirloom Audio adventures. Currently, there are four audio dramas available:

Under Drake’s Flag – Under Drake’s Flag is an exciting adventure about the English explorer Sir Francis Drake. The story follows a boy named Ned Hawkshaw as he takes on adventure with Sir Francis Drake during the Spanish Inquisition. 

In Freedom’s Cause – In Freedom’s Cause is based on GA Henty’s novel of the same name. We got to learn all about Scotland’s fight for freedom from England. The story follows a fictional character, Ned, who wants to avenge his father’s death in the fight for Scotland. Ned gets to interact with real characters from history (William Wallace and Robert the Bruce) and learn what it takes to become a true man. This story is not only about war, but it’s about godly men doing the work of heroes. Your kids will learn about bravery, chivalry, and what it takes to be a man.

With Lee in Virginia – With Lee in Virginia is my personal favorite because I love Civil War history. This story follows 15 year old Vincent Wingfield who joins the cavalry with the army in Northern Virginia. He believes he is going on a great adventure, but he discovers General Lee’s devotion to God that allows Vincent to take a stand for his country and fellow man. 

The Dragon and the Raven – The Dragon and the Raven follows the story of Kind Alfred of Wessex and a boy named Edmund as they fight the Danes who have desecrated much of England. They learn that in order to save their country, they must turn back to God. 

Aside from amazingly exciting audio dramas, Heirloom Audio also includes study guides with each CD. The study guides are perfect for homeschool families who want to dig a little deeper into each story. Each study guide was designed by Christian educators as a complete curricula to go along with each story. I enjoy using study guides to ensure my kids are understanding the stories that they are hearing, and it’s just plain fun to have a little guide to help with discussion points.

How We Use the Audio Dramas with Our Quiet Time Activities

My absolute favorite way to use the audio adventures is during quiet time. If your kids are like mine, they heave a big sigh when it’s time for quiet time. My younger kids nap during this time, but my two older children would rather do a quiet activity. I love setting my oldest son up with some LEGOs and turning on an adventure. He will sit for a good hour or more just listening and laughing to the story while he plays.

My daughter was a bit skeptical at first. She couldn’t believe that there were no pictures to go along with the stories. I explained to her that all she had to do was listen and she could use her imagination to see pictures in her mind. Those pictures would be all her own. It didn’t take long before I knew she was enjoying the Audio Adventures. I overheard her while she was playing alone and talking to herself about, “The Dragon and the Raven.”

Another great way to use these audio productions is during road trips. We have not gone on a road trip since we got the CDs, but I definitely plan to bring them along on our next adventure! 

Do we recommend Heirloom Audio?

Absolutely! If you are looking to add some adventure to your homeschool, these stories would be the perfect addition. They are great to play during downtime in your homeschool day, and as I mentioned would make a great accompaniment to your next road trip. 

My very favorite part of Heirloom Audio adventures is the Christian morals. Each story not only provides a captivating tale with movie-like quality, but each story provides a life lesson with a Christian perspective. It’s perfect for our family!
