why we homeschool

The past few months have been full of challenges for me and my family. When faced with challenges my blog is usually the first thing that gets pushed to the wayside. August brought a hospitalization for my husband and then a surgery to remove a pericardial cyst. I became very overwhelmed with everything and just could not keep up with the Back to Homeschool blog hop like I hoped I could. That said, I do want to finish my posts anyway.

Today I want to talk about why we homeschool. There are many reasons and it is difficult to write it all down, but I’m going to try.

When I first became a mother, I never imagined I would homeschool. My husband and I were both raised in the public school system and I think we just both assumed our children would go the same route.

When my son was around 2, I began researching preschool. I honestly kept hesitating to put him in preschool because it just did not feel right to me. I saw other moms with kids my son’s age putting their kids in preschool programs and I felt like it was something I “should” do, but my gut just kept telling me that I shouldn’t.

I started learning about preschool at home and I just began to teach him myself. We had a lot of fun exploring together and learning the basics.

Eventually I stumbled upon the Charlotte Mason method and my passion for homeschooling began. I never dreamed there was a way to educate children other than the way I was educated. The more I learned about the Charlotte Mason method, the more I realized how much I missed out on in public schools! I remember all the time I spent just sitting at a desk waiting for the bell to ring. I remember all of the cancelled field trips my class did not get to go on because a few kids misbehaved and ruined it for everyone. I remember the bullying, the promiscuity, the bomb threats, and the drugs that were carefully hidden. I don’t have to send my children into that!

Of course, public school wasn’t all bad. I met a very few good friends and did learn things. I was an honor student and didn’t have to deal with a lot of the classes where the troubled students were. I got scholarships and did have a teacher or two that left lasting impressions (both good and bad).

Ultimately I decided to homeschool to give my children the chance to follow their passions. There will be no sitting in a desk for 25 minutes with nothing to do because my son finished his test and has to wait on everyone else. We also want to give our children a Christian education, something that is impossible in the public schools and very expensive in the private schools.

We are blessed to live in a time where we aren’t the only people doing this! There is an entire homeschool community right here in our area. We get together for play dates and will soon start a co-op. This gives the kids opportunities to meet friends their own ages and learn from other people. There are homeschool programs everywhere and opportunities abound!

I feel confident in our decision to educate our children at home. Check out my last post about what we are using for this year’s kindergarten curriculum.
