Welcome back to the Poppins Book Nook! This month’s theme is “Ye Old Pirates!” For this theme we read How I Became a Pirate by Melinda Long. This book has awesome illustrations and tells the story of a boy named Jeremy Jacob who was just minding his business on the beach building a sand castle when a pirate ships sails into view. He joins Captain Braid Beard and learns all about pirate life, including how to throw food and sing sea chanteys. He also learns that pirate life means he doesn’t get read stories or tucked into bed at night. Today I’m going to share with you some How I Became a Pirate activities!

How I Became a Pirate

For this book, my kiddos did two different activities. They were both extremely simple!

How I Became a Pirate Activities

These activities are so much fun to do after you read the story together!

Make a Treasure Chest

They did this craft with Nana. She bought some DIY Papier-Mache mini treasure chests from Oriental Trading. The kids got to paint and design their very own treasure chests! It was a very simple craft, but they had a lot of fun and got to be creative.

Make a Pirate Map

My kids enjoy making their own maps. I leave this as a completely open-ended activity and I let them do whatever they want to do. They get a large sheet of construction paper and get to design their very own maps. Bug is really interested in cats right now, so he made a cat island on his map. Sometimes the simplest activities inspire the greatest imagination!

Other Fun Pirate Activities

Make a ship from a cardboard box!

Pirate Hat Craft

Pirate Sensory Bin

Printable Pirate Playdough Mats
