As a brand new homeschool mom, I am already struggling to find balance. I often feel completely overwhelmed by everything on my plate. I have the huge responsibility of educating my children, a home to maintain, a husband who needs me to be his wife, a blog to run, and a myriad of other responsibilities. I recently got the opportunity to review Flourish: Balance for Homeschool Moms by Mary Jo Tate. This is a book put out by Apologia Educational Ministries to help homeschool moms like me and you find balance in our lives.
About Flourish: Balance for Homeschool Moms
Tate has written a book that gives practical and wise advice for all of us homeschool moms who are ready to stop the juggling act. We do not have to be walking zombies anymore! There are 16 chapters each with practical advice to help you change your life. At the end of each chapter is a section called Take Action! This section asks you specific questions about how you will apply what you have learned to your life.
Here’s a look at just a few of the topics covered in the book:
- Change Your Mind to Change Your Time
- The FREEDOM Toolbox
- Setting Goals
- Managing Interruptions
- Training Your Children
- Home Business
There are several other chapters covered. There’s even an entire chapter just for single moms. At the very back of the book you will find an appendix with all of the nifty forms to help you evaluate yourself and keep track of your time.
How I’m Applying Flourish to My Life
I am now using the FREEDOM toolbox to help me manage my crazy life and the challenges that are constantly thrown my way. I’m learning to focus, reflect, educate, eliminate, discipline, organize, and multitask my way through situations that arise. I have always had trouble with finding my focus and I have lacked self-discipline. When I start a project I do not always finish it. I am a writer, I need to write!
The chapter on training your children also hit home with me. All three of my children are still very young, and training them the right way is very important to me. My husband and I have long instilled responsibility into our children, but I have been inspired to create age-appropriate chore charts for them. As our children get older, we also believe in teaching them independence. I really liked the section on teaching initiative. I think this is something all parents can learn to teach their children. Showing them that if they see something that needs done even though it is not their normal responsibility, they can take the initiative to go ahead and do it anyway. These were all awesome tips!
Another section I really enjoyed was the Home Business chapter. I have long wanted to turn my blog into a business, but I have struggled with it. I mostly know what I have been doing wrong. I just needed a boost and some encouragement to turn things around. I have been inspired to continue educating myself in this field of blogging. There are all kinds of goodies packed into this chapter to help you get started with any home business. You’ll learn about generating income, tracking your time, selling, marketing, and much more.
There is so much more in this book to truly help you Flourish in your life.
