Oh, we all know. Seasons come and seasons go. As we head into the autumn season, I’ve been pondering the seasons of homemaking, as well. Today I want to share with you how I continue homemaking through not only the ebbs and flows of the literal seasons, but also the ebbs and flows of the seasons of my life as a homemaker.

Life as a New Homemaker
Sixteen years really doesn’t seem that long ago, but in many ways it was a lifetime ago. I had no idea how to be a homemaker. I wasn’t raised with homemaking in mind. In this season of my life I had to buckle down and learn how to care for my home, and also how to be a decent wife. I’m sorry to say I wasn’t very good at either of those things.

The first thing I did was learn how to cook. I used Rachel Ray’s first cookbook, 30 Minute Meals, to learn how to make all sorts of easy dishes. My cooking skills slowly improved, and I branched out to my cast iron skillet recipes and even my Instant Pot recipes.
During the first year of our marriage we welcomed our fist baby, so I added motherhood to my role and my list of things I needed to learn how to do exploded. It took time to find a balance, but housekeeping was something that just kept slipping.
Life as a Homemaker with Young Children
If you know my story, you know I continued having babies every couple of years or so. It became so imperative that I added routines to my homemaking because it was so easy for things to just explode if they weren’t attended to.

This is the time I developed my cleaning routine. This cleaning routine is something that ebbs and flows with the seasons of my life to this day. Sometimes I can get my cleaning done in chunks throughout the week, but when we are very busy all week, I end up getting the bulk of my cleaning routine done on the weekends. I always tend to follow the same order for my cleaning routine, I just may change the days things get done and that’s ok!

I also wrote A Homemaker’s Prayer during this season of my life. I always need to rely on God to get me through, and I pray daily to Him in all the things I do.
Planning became a big part of my life during this time, and it continues to be essential, otherwise I will forget things! You know I love my Homemaker’s Friend daily planner. It’s like my second brain! I also use this cute budget planner to track our finances. Of course, meal planning is also a necessity during this time of your life!
Life as a Homemaker with Children of Various Ages
Now that I have teens and tweens, along with young children, I include them in my homemaking. After all, we are all home contributing to the mess and Mama can’t keep up with everyone and everything.
My kids learn how to do age appropriate chores alongside me and then eventually they get their own chores to take over. Having help with the dirty dishes, making older children responsible for their own laundry, having the kids clean their own bathroom, and including them in food preparation are all important life skills that contribute to the smooth running of the household.
I know there will come a day that I’m homemaking with an empty nest. I’m sure that will be a huge transition, and no, I don’t really look forward to it, but this is how life goes.
Homemaking with the Seasons
While homemaking changes with our personal seasons, it also changes with the world’s physical seasons. In fall we break out our cute fall decor and make our homes cozy as we prepare for winter.

Autumn is the time I make my elderberry syrup and we make chili and lots of delicious soups! I love to decorate our little front porch for fall.

In winter we get very cozy inside. We have lots of warm blankets around the home and I always keep hot chocolate on hand. We watch more movies and read more books. It’s always a good time to take up a handicraft like knitting or crochet in the winter.

Spring is a favorite time of year because everything outside is waking up. We plan and plant our gardens, add bright colors back in to our decor, change the flannel sheets on the bed to lighter ones, and prepare for Easter.

Finally, summer is the time of endless bounty. We harvest delicious veggies from the garden, buy yummy in-season fruits from the grocery or farmer’s markets, and spend more time playing outside. It’s the season of grass mowing and fresh garden flowers in vases.
Homemaking is such a beautiful profession. Each season of homemaking has something to offer, something for us to learn. I feel so incredibly blessed to be a homemaker.
