gardening in raised beds

Last week Mr. Simple and I put in our very first raised bed. We have gardened in containers for a few years and wanted to have a little more space to grow some of our favorite things. We are definitely not experts on gardening in raised beds, but we are learning as we go along.

We are starting small this year. Mr. Simple built two beds, each 2’x8′ and we pushed them together so they look like one bed that’s 4 feet wide. Our yard has a lot of large trees, and there’s only one area in our yard that gets a decent amount of sunlight. We are sticking with this one bed in this spot so we can make sure it gets enough sunlight. I have big plans to eventually expand and add more beds in this area, but this has to work out first.

We are growing tomatoes, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, pole beans, and blueberries in our raised bed.  Mr. Simple really loves growing blueberries. I kind of wish we had put them in another bed sort of away from where the vegetable bed is, but we already had the plants and these are the only beds we are building this year. One of the bushes is a couple of years old and produced a handful of blueberries last year. The other three bushes are brand new this year.

I found a really neat website that explains square foot gardening in terms that I understand and shows you exactly how to plant things. I will refer to this next year when planning our garden!

We are also growing some things in containers this year. We have rosemary and lavender growing together, basil in a pot, mint in a pot, and we are growing a fig tree.

The kids loved helping us plant our little garden. Bug said, “I’m so glad we are growing food!”

I hope to update you as the season goes on. Hopefully we get a decent harvest from the few little plants we have growing this year!

I have a lot of great resources for gardening collected on one of my Pinterest boards. Come follow me over there if you like!
