I love gardens. All kinds of gardens. Vegetable and flower gardens. I will be the first to admit that although I love plants, I have my mother’s black thumb of plant death. Luckily for me, my husband loves plants even more than I do and he has a green thumb! We are currently renting our property, so we can’t go crazy with putting in raised beds for vegetables. We grow a lot of things in containers, and we did put in one small raised bed, which is perfect for square foot gardening.

Square foot gardening is perfect for people trying to live a simple life in the suburbs. We don’t have a huge space to till up for a traditional garden. Square foot gardens are also easier to care for, and they get less weeds than traditional gardens.

Our bed is actually two beds pushed together. It is 4’x8′ and one side is devoted solely to my husband’s blueberry bushes. My husband built the beds himself. We put rocks on the very bottom of the beds before filling with soil.

The other side of the bed is where we try our hand at growing a few vegetables. We have one tomato plant, two cucumbers, and some squash plants. Technically, squash plants need at least 2 square feet per plant, so they take up the majority of our bed. I love my squash, though!

Last year we got quite a few tomatoes, some cucumbers, and some beans. Our squash plants died early on. I’m thinking it’s because of all the rain we got last year, but I don’t know for sure. We are trying again this year!

There are so many wonderful resources for square foot gardening. Here are some of my favorites!

Eventually I would love to add more raised beds! What’s growing in your garden?
