I’m so thankful I live in a world where there are Octobers. Fall is the perfect time of year to revel in God’s beauty. I encourage you to get outside and enjoy the crisp, cool air and sight see in your very own town. Here you will find 10 fun fall activities for families! Let’s celebrate fall!
10 Fun Fall Activities for Families
1. Tour an old cemetery.
Ok, so maybe this sounds a little morbid, but I’m a big history buff. I have always enjoyed wandering around the old cemeteries in my town and looking at the graves from long ago. We have some cemeteries with graves from Civil War soldiers and it’s just interesting to see how long people lived and what was written on their headstones.
2. Visit the historic district.
I love visiting the historic district of our town. Just driving around looking at the old houses is fun to me. If you watch the newspaper, you may find that sometimes the historic district will have an open house where you can actually go inside and tour the older homes. As I mentioned before, I am a history lover so touring old houses is entertainment for me.
3. Go for a hike.
Find out when the peak time for fall foliage is in your area and go for a hike. Don’t forget to bring your camera and get some pictures of the beautiful landscape! The foliage doesn’t last too long here, so savor it!
4. Learn about your towns “haunted” sites.
Our local library actually does a presentation on the “haunted” historic places in our state. It’s a lot of fun and even if you don’t believe in ghost stories it’s still interesting to hear. Once again, this goes back to my love of history!
5. Go to your local fall festival.
Fall festivals are so much fun. The weather is usually tolerable, there are fun games and activities for the kids, and you can learn about local businesses that you can support. Pus, there’s good fall food!
6. Take your kids to a harvest party.
Many local churches have harvest parties. There are typically games and fun food at these events. Your kids can dress in costume and collect candy in a safe environment.
7. Make fun fall treats together.
Make candy apples or put together these cute pumpkin patch treats! You can even buy treat kits to make together. Try a new recipe for pumpkin bread or apple pie!
8. Visit a local pumpkin patch.
Of course, we can’t leave this one off the list! We have a favorite pumpkin patch we visit every year. There is a petting zoo, hayride, playground, pig races, and more to do at this farm. It’s always a good time!
9. Go on a fall themed scavenger hunt.
Do a fall nature study and put together a fun scavenger hunt. What signs of fall can you spot?
10. Have a bonfire.
Here in the south we love bonfires. Since we live on base, we have a small fire in our fire pit and roast marshmallows. Tell stories or just talk. It’s a lot of fun!
I’m going to end this series with a quote from George Eliot about my favorite time of the year!
“Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love – that makes life and nature harmonise. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” – George Eliot
