As the leaves start to turn and the air grows crisp, fall feels like the perfect season to reset our homes. Summer often leaves behind sandy floors, cluttered corners, and a little bit of chaos from all the fun and busyness. Before the holiday season sweeps in, I like to take some time in early autumn to freshen up our home with a simple homemaking checklist.

I’m all about creating a clean, cozy foundation so we can enjoy the season without feeling overwhelmed.

Declutter the High-Traffic Spaces

Fall is a natural reset point. Before we bring in pumpkins, holiday décor, or winter coats, it helps to clear out what no longer serves us.

  • Sort through the entryway: shoes, jackets, and bags.
  • Tidy the living room: toys, books, or summer gear that crept in.
  • Declutter kitchen counters: put away what doesn’t belong so surfaces feel light and fresh.

A little intentional decluttering now makes room for the cozy touches of fall.

Deep Clean the Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially in fall when soups simmer on the stove and baking becomes a family activity. (This is my favorite cast iron dutch oven for yummy soups!)

  • Wipe down cabinets, counters, and appliances. If you have any moldy appliances, this Mold Stain Remover works amazing! I love this dishwasher cleaner, too.
  • Clean out the refrigerator and pantry. Check out my post on how to deep clean a refrigerator.
  • Restock fall staples (flour, sugar, baking spices, canned goods, broth).
  • Sweep and mop the floors.

This step sets the stage for all the cooking and gathering that fall brings.

    Refresh Bedrooms and Linens

Cooler nights call for cozy layers. Fall is the time to bring back warmth and comfort.

    • Swap lightweight summer bedding for warmer blankets or quilts.
    • Wash and air out comforters before the chill sets in.
    • Declutter nightstands and drawers.
    • Add a small seasonal touch like a candle or a vase of autumn branches.

A restful bedroom makes such a difference when days grow shorter.

Tidy and Cozy the Living Spaces

Our family naturally gathers indoors more often in the fall, so I like to make sure our living spaces are both clean and inviting.

    Fall home decor
    • Dust surfaces, shelves, and baseboards.
    • Vacuum couches, rugs, and corners.
    • Add cozy layers such as throw blankets, warm-toned pillows, soft lighting.
    • Create a small seasonal centerpiece (a bowl of apples or a pumpkin on the table).

It doesn’t take much to turn everyday spaces into cozy havens.

    Prepare for the Holidays Ahead

Fall homemaking isn’t just about the here and now, it’s also about setting ourselves up for a smoother holiday season.

    • Check your dining area and serving dishes.
    • Restock candles, paper goods, and baking supplies.
    • Declutter closets to make room for upcoming coats, boots, and holiday gifts.
    • Make a note of any home projects you’d like to finish before guests arrive.

By preparing a little now, we ease the stress later.

What’s the first thing you like to do in your home when fall arrives?
