How To Clean a Glass Top Stove

How To Clean a Glass Top Stove Burner

The easiest way to clean a glass top stove is to avoid letting any grease or gunk bake on to the burner. Glass top stoves should be cleaned ideally after every use to prevent the glass surface from developing stubborn stains. Here’s how to clean your cooking surface after one use:

  • Wait for the stove to cool down completely.
  • Remove all crumbs from the stovetop.
  • Squirt a little Dawn dish soap on the surface of the glass top stove.
  • Using a nonscratching cleaning pad, scouring pad, or a damp cloth, scrub away all gunk using circular motions.
  • Wet and completely wring out a sponge. Wipe the sponge in one direction on the stovetop to remove all of the soap residue and any excess water.
  • Finish with a dry microfiber cloth for a streak-free shine.

How To Clean Burnt On Food Off of a Glass Top Stove

This method is for more stuck-on food messes. I actually had to use this method on my stove to remove black marks from the burners. It’s not as hard as you may think and is the best way to remove burn marks for a clean glass stovetop.

  • Soak a clean towel in hot water, ring it out, and place it on your cool stovetop.
  • Allow the steam from the towel to soften burnt on food.
  • Use a small scraper like this one or a handheld razor blade held at a 45-degree angle to scrape the burnt on pieces off of the surface of the stove top.
  • Apply a glass stovetop cleaner and wipe with a barely damp sponge until all residue is removed.
  • Follow up with a microfiber towel to shine your stovetop.

How To Clean a Glass Stove Top with Baking Soda

Baking soda is often used in cleaning because it works well as a gentle cleanser. If you’re looking for natural cleaners because you want to avoid harsh chemicals, give this method a try.

Here’s my favorite method for using baking soda on your glass stove top.

  • Squirt some dish soap on your stovetop. (Try one of these non toxic dish soaps.)
  • Sprinkle some baking soda over the soap.
  • Use a spray bottle and soak the baking soda with white vinegar.
  • Use a non-scratch pad to rub the top of the stove and remove the crud.
  • Follow up with a barely damp sponge, paper towel,  to remove all of the remaining residue.
  • Finish with a microfiber cloth.

Can you use car wax on your glass stove top?

I have never personally tried this, but some people swear that you can apply a thin layer of car wax to your glass stove top to make it easier to clean when you have food spill over. In order to make this work, make sure you clean your glass stove top with one of the methods above, and then apply a thin veneer of car wax to the stove top. Buff it in with a lint free cloth or paper towel. The wax should last for a couple of weeks before you need to do the wax treatment again.

The methods above should get you well on your way to a shining glass stove top again!

What should you avoid when cleaning a glass stove top?

I don’t suggest steel wool because it will scratch the surface. I would also avoid any abrasive products that may cause scratches. The best thing you can do is keep up with your regular cleaning of your stovetop to prevent food particles from burning onto the glass!
