As a homeschooling mom of seven, I’m always on the lookout for curriculum that is both effective and easy to implement. When it came time to choose a math program for my first grader, I wanted something that provided solid instruction without overwhelming either of us. That’s when I found Math with Confidence by Kate Snow, and I’m so glad I did. I love sharing homeschool curriculum reviews here on the blog, so I’m excited to talk all about this math curriculum!

Math with Confidence First Grade Review

What Is Math with Confidence?

First Grade Math with Confidence is a scripted, open-and-go curriculum that focuses on building strong number sense, hands-on learning, and math mastery through gentle, incremental lessons. The program is published by Well-Trained Mind Press and is part of a growing series for K–6th grade.

The first grade level includes:

  • A Teacher’s Guide with scripted lessons, games, and teaching tips
  • A Student Workbook for written practice and review

Each week includes four core lessons and one review day, making it very manageable even for busy homeschool families.

You will need to purchase items for a Math Kit. I like to call it our Math Box because I keep everything in a lidded storage box that is ready to go when we do our math lessons. We love these dino counters in our Math Box!

What I Love About This Program

Open-and-Go Simplicity
The scripted lessons mean I don’t have to prep much at all. I just open the guide, glance over the materials needed (often just household items), and go. It fits beautifully into our morning rhythm.

Hands-On
Before moving into the written workbook pages, there’s always a short warm-up and hands-on activities using things like coins, counters, or number cards. This keeps my child engaged and helps concepts click.

Developmentally Appropriate
The pacing is just right. It’s thorough without being too fast, and there’s lots of review built in. My child feels confident and successful.

Games and Gentle Review
Instead of dry drills, there are fun games sprinkled throughout the weeks. My kids don’t even realize they’re reviewing, they just think we’re playing together! I love that there is spiral review built in to this curriculum.

Simplistic Workbook Pages
I love how simple the workbook pages are. They are colorful, yet they don’t overwhelm my child like other curricula have.

What You Should Know

This isn’t a workbook-only program. You’ll need to be involved and present during each lesson, but the lessons are short (about 15–20 minutes), and honestly, it’s time well spent.

If your child is already advanced in math, you might find the pace a bit slow. But for most children, especially those new to structured math, it’s a beautiful fit.

First Grade Math with Confidence has lived up to its name in our home. My child feels successful, I feel supported, and the lessons are joyful and effective. It aligns well with our Charlotte Mason-inspired, gentle approach to early education.
