We love poetry in our homeschool and we love to read poetry a lot as part of our Charlotte Mason education. One of our very favorite poems is Robert Louis Stevenson’s “My Shadow.” It is absolutely adorable and the kids love reading it and I think they have most of it memorized. I decided to collect a variety of activities that we can do that are inspired by “My Shadow!”

“My Shadow” Poetry Activities

Shadow Puppets

Are my kids the only kids who love making shadow puppets? Every now and then we will have a “sleepover” in our living room and the kids will always create shadow puppets on the wall.

They love seeing all the different animals they can make with their hands. We also discuss how they can make their puppets bigger and smaller by moving further away from or closer to the wall.

Silhouettes

We have not done this yet, but I will make cameo silhouettes of my children. All you do is tape a black piece of construction paper to the wall and have your child sit in front of a lamp with the shade off. Trace the outline of your child’s head, and then cut out the outline. Frame the silhouette and hang it up! I plan to put ours in the schoolroom!

Lamp Shadow Cutouts

Print a cutout of a favorite character, like Peter Pan and tape the cut-out to the inside of your child’s lampshade. We tried to tape the cutout to the top of the lamp, but it didn’t cast a shadow on the wall, which would have been really awesome!
