I think housekeeping routines may be one of the hardest things to figure out as a homemaker. Every home and family is unique, so each individual homemaker will need to decide what chores and tasks need to be done. In this post I’m going to give you 5 tips for creating a custom homemaking routine. These tips will help you become a homemaking boss!

5 Tips for Creating a Custom Homemaking Routine

Create a simple morning and evening housekeeping routine for daily tasks.

The pillar of your homemaking routine will be your morning and evening routines. What you do first thing in the morning will set the tone for the rest of the day, and what you do last thing in the evening can make or break your mornings.

My morning cleaning routine consists of making my bed, straightening my room, starting a load of laundry, checking on the kitchen, and making sure the kids have done their morning routine.

My evening cleaning routine is pretty essential for a happier morning. If I get up and there’s tons of mess, it sets off a chain of events that bog down the entire day.

Before dinner the kids and I quickly declutter the main living areas. After dinner we all work together to pick up the kitchen and dining room. We make sure the dishes are done and the floor is swept.

My morning and evening routines are when I work on all of my daily tasks. You know, those things that just have to be done every single day to make sure your house is relatively clean.

Set up zone cleaning for deep cleaning tasks.

For deep cleaning, I use a zone cleaning system. This system ensures that you’ll never have to spring clean again! Each week I tackle a different zone of my house and work on cleaning a little of that zone at a time. It consists of decluttering, cleaning baseboards, ceiling fans, and windows. It’s so nice to have a fresh house throughout the week!

Use a vintage housekeeping schedule for other tasks.

I really like the idea of a vintage housekeeping schedule. In my monthly cleaning calendars, I break down my weekly cleaning tasks by day. So, one day is dusting day, the next is mirrors/glass, mopping, vacuuming, and then bathroom cleaning.

You could also add other chores to your days. Maybe you only need to do laundry once a week. Another day could be a baking day, a sewing/craft day, or a planning day. The possibilities are really endless!

Put Your Homemaking Plan Together.

If keeping track of all of these routines is overwhelming to you, a home management binder can really help you to organize your home. My Clean & Organized Home Management System helps you keep track of not only your cleaning routines, but also all other aspects of your home. It includes printables for budgeting, gardening, school planning, fitness, and family management on top of the amazing home management pritnables!

Don’t Let the Schedule Control You.

Things happen. Kids get sick, you go on vacation, something unexpected pops up, you spend the day out running errands or shopping, etc. I always teach that you can move your schedule around. Combine weekly tasks on one day if need be. Skip that chore that week. It’s ok if you have to. Don’t let the schedule control you, but pick it up where you left off.

Need extra encouragement? I wrote A Homemaker’s Prayer when I first became a homemaker to help me keep my focus on why I’m doing what I’m doing as a homemaker. It’s been a source of encouragement for me and countless other women for the past few years.
