Today is Day 1 of Handicraft Tuesdays here at Simple Living Mama and I’m really excited about this handicraft! If you aren’t familiar with handicrafts, the term is popular in the Charlotte Mason homeschool community and basically means using your hands to make something useful! Today I am going to show you how to make homemade lip balm! This lip balm is extremely nourishing. You can even make and give this lip balm as a Christmas gift!

How to make your own lip balm
Today I am making apricot lip balm using a kit sent to me by Urban Kangaroo. Kits can make this process really easy because they come with instructions and pre-measured ingredients. I am also going to share with you the basic ingredients for DIY lip balm that you can purchase separately if you decide you want to make it on your own more often.
What are the best ingredients for lip balm?

You’ll want to use quality ingredients when making your own lip balm. You’ll need oil (olive, coconut, or grapeseed) and either cocoa or shea butter. I also use beeswax pellets in all of my lip balms. You’ll use essential oils or extracts to flavor your lip balm. I’ll give you some ideas below.
Essential Oil/Extract – I like Rocky Mountain Oils. Apricot, vanilla, and maple extracts would be fun, too!
How do you make natural lip balm?

Here is the basic recipe:
- 3 tablespoons beeswax pellets
- 2 tablespoons cocoa butter (can also use shea butter)
- 4 tablespoons oil (grapeseed, olive, almond, or coconut oil)
- 10-20 drops essential oil OR 1/2 dram flavor oil
I use a double boiler and melt the beeswax, cocoa butter, and oil together. You can also add all of the ingredients to a microwave safe bowl and melt in 30 second increments in the microwave. Once all the elements are combined, stir in your flavor combination.
Use the pipette to fill each of your lip balm tubes and once the liquid comes to room temperature it will harden and be ready to use! Easy peasy!
