Our Preschool Homeschool Curriculum 2012-2013

I wasn’t sure if I could classify myself as a homeschooling mom because my kids aren’t old enough to be officially enrolled in school. My son, however, is almost 4 and definitely ready to start a very relaxed homeschool preschool program. Later on this month I will be sharing with you how we do our Charlotte Mason preschool, but I really wanted to participate in the “Not” Back-to-School blog hop and show you what preschool homeschool curriculum we plan to use.

Bug will be 4 in October. I’m definitely not pushing him to do any sort of schooling, but I am introducing him to things. As part of our Charlotte Mason homeschool, we spend a lot of time playing both inside and outside. We read Bible stories and wonderful children’s literature together. I am introducing art appreciation and music appreciation to him simply by exposing him to fine art and classical music.

While the above make up the bulk of our homeschool, we are going to start using some curriculum to teach reading, writing, and math.

Beginning Reading

I have an older curriculum on CD-Rom that I cannot find anywhere online. It’s called the Big Book of Preschool by Fun-4 Kidz. We will be using their Alphabet workbook to reinforce letter and letter sound recognition.

I do incorporate Leapfrog products into our homeschool. I have found the Letter Factory DVD beneficial, as well as the Fridge Phonics: Magnetic Alphabet Set.

Once letters are mastered (he mostly knows them now) we will then move on to Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

 Writing

This is one area I think we will need to practice a lot. Bug is left-handed and I’m having a lot of trouble showing him how to hold a writing utensil correctly.

We are starting out with My First Book of Tracing by Kumon.

Then we will work on letter writing with Dry Erase Capital Letters and Lowercase Letters notebooks by Mead.

Once he can write with a dry erase marker, we will move on to pencil and paper with the Handwriting workbook from the Big Book of Preschool.

Math

We will be using the Numbers and Counting workbook from the Big Book of Preschool to work on number recognition.

I plan to use Counting Bears for hands-on counting and sorting.

Music

We will be listening to classical music by Beethoven.

Art

We will be admiring artwork from Olga’s Gallery.

Nature Study

We love to get outdoors and explore. I’m going to be introducing nature journals to both of the kids this year. Our nature journal will simply be a doodling pad and some colored pencils or watercolors. I’m going to encourage the kids to “sketch” what they observe outdoors.

Extras 

I’m thinking about enrolling Bug in soccer in the spring if he is interested and possibly joining a local homeschool group. I just need to make sure they let preschoolers be a part of the group.
