Are you just getting started with simple living? Perhaps you’re craving a slower lifestyle because you’re tired of the hurried and busy life you’ve been living. I think the best place to start learning how to live a simple life, besides following blogs like this one, is with a good book. In today’s post I’m going to recommend seven of the best books on living a simple life.

Books about Living a Simpler Life

The first book I’m going to suggest is a must read for parents. It was one of the first simple living books I ever read. In this Simplicity Parenting, Kim John Payne challenges parents to raise kids a bit differently than the rest of society. Instead of busying kids lives, the object is to slow down and give kids a real childhood that leads to less stress and anxiety.

The author of Down To Earth began my entire journey toward simple living when I read her blog, Down To Earth. Rhonda Hetzel is a delightful Australian woman with a knack for simplifying life in the best of ways. Because of her I began baking bread, and my desire to own chickens also grew because of her blog. You’ll be inspired to make your house a home, to slow down and savor the little things, and to dive into simpler living.

One of the things I’m currently striving for in my own home is switching to more sustainable products and producing as little waste as possible. With a family of nine, we can create a lot of trash! Simply Living Well is a guide to a more low waste lifestyle. You’ll explore ideas for a low-waste kitchen, natural cleaning, natural wellness, natural bath and body, and how to create a kitchen garden. I really enjoy all of the projects and recipes in this book. It’s a great book to keep on your shelf to reference when starting your simple living journey.

In Destination Simple, Brooke McAlary shows you that even with a busy, full life you, too, can slow down, say not to things that are too much for you, minimize stress, and find pockets of peace in your busiest days. The book is broken into two parts: Rituals and Rhythms. I often talk about rhythms here on the blog. Rhythms give us direction without tying us to the clock. I think this little book will help anyone who needs a hand in getting started with a slow, simple life.

I have read the Little House Living blog for years, so I was delighted to pick up Little House Living by Merissa A. Alink. This is another wonderful project book for those who have already started on their way toward simple living. It’s a great reference book to have on your shelves and full of delicious recipes and natural bath and body product ideas.

I have also enjoyed reading Lisa Bass’ blog, Farmhouse on Boone, so I was delighted when I saw that she had written a book, Simple Farmhouse Life. This is another book filled with great projects and inspiration for slowing down and simplifying your life. Often when we opt for a simple life, we decide to start making things ourselves, so books like this one are a great jumping point in learning how to make food from scratch or sew your own aprons!

Whether you are just getting started with your simple living journey, or you are looking for more ways you can simplify your life, I highly recommend you add some simple living books to your shelves. There are so many resources available today to help you slow down and savor the simple life!
