It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of the homeschool morning basket and morning time for teaching my kids all sorts of subjects! We started implementing a homeschool morning time a couple of years ago and have continued tweaking it and using it to some degree ever since. At this point in time I teach two main age groups in my homeschool: elementary/middle and early years kids. Today I am going to share some of my favorite homeschool morning themes and ideas for elementary and middle school students.

Our Favorite Morning Time Curriculum

When I first started doing our morning time, I created my own morning basket. I pulled together various resources from our main curriculum, My Father’s World, and added in nature study, poetry, artist study, etc from other places. These days I use a morning time curriculum. We use The Homeschool Garden to pull in all of those wonderful Charlotte Mason type subjects that are hard to fit in unless you are purposeful about adding them.

These days I aim to match our morning time studies to what we are studying with My Father’s World, whether that be science or history, but sometimes I veer from that pattern and choose a morning time theme that my children are interested in learning about.

Autumn Morning Time

The Autumn morning time plan was one of the first morning time plans we tried, and I decided to do it again just a few months ago. My oldest worked on cursive copywork from the poetry of Robert Frost, we read lovely poems, and really enjoyed our fall nature study.

Thanksgiving Morning Time

November is a wonderful time to do a Thanksgiving morning time in your homeschool. We read lots of great Thanksgiving themed books and read The Goblin Market.

Snow

Why not study snow in winter? We learned about Cezanne and Bach, had a lovely, snowy teatime, and learned the song, “In the Bleak Midwinter.”

Winter Birds

Another great theme for a homeschool morning time or morning basket is a bird theme! We used the Winter Birds morning time plans from The Homeschool Garden to learn all about different birds. My kids love learning about animals, so the bird nature study was just perfect! We also did a bird watercolor painting.

Ireland

If you’re studying geography, a morning time themed basket specific to the country you are studying is just perfect! I have a special love for Ireland and we did the Ireland morning time plans in March 2019. We learned about the Book of Kells, the flora and fauna of Ireland, and read a lot of great Irish books!
