If you follow the Charlotte Mason way of home education, then you know that handicrafts are a wonderful way for children to learn and create. Christmas is absolutely the perfect season to begin working on handicrafts with your child. You can use your handicrafts to decorate your home or to give away to friends and neighbors!

Christmas Handicraft ideas

Christmas Handicrafts for Kids

Our family is a huge fan of Charlotte Mason handicrafts throughout the year, and there are so many beautiful Christmas handicrafts you can do right alongside your kids during Advent. Let’s dive in to some that are simple, yet beautiful!

Create a Dried Orange Garland

Drying oranges is a simple process. You simply slice oranges in uniform sizes and dry on parchment paper on a baking sheet in a 200 degree F oven until the orange are dried through. In years’ past we created lovely and simple dried orange garlands. This year we opted to use the dried oranges as simple ornaments.

Popcorn Cranberry Garland

On my bucket list is a lovely popcorn and cranberry garland. I love that these garlands originated in the 1800s. The simple act of stringing the popcorn and garland in lovely patterns is soothing to the soul and looks so beautiful on a Christmas tree. This tutorial for creating a popcorn and cranberry garland with kids is simple.

Make a Christmas Wreath

Another simple, yet beautiful handicraft that even children can do is create a Christmas wreath. There are so many different ways you can do this. This tutorial for a natural Christmas wreath is simple and beautiful.

Create Homemade Beauty Products

We have created several homemade beauty products over the years to give as gifts. My absolute favorite and probably one of the simplest you can make is homemade lip balm. We prefer to use natural products for our lip balm, so a kit like this one is perfect.

You can also check out the tutorial I created when we made homemade lip balm a few years ago.

Make Christmas Cards

My kids and I love to watercolor and we do try to work on the skill as often as we can. Creating simple, homemade Christmas cards is a lovely way to create handicrafts that spread joy to all those around us. There are many watercolor Christmas card ideas out there for beginners and pros alike. This tutorial is great for beginners.

Roll Beeswax Candles

You’ll catch us rolling beeswax candles almost every year! This incredibly simple handicraft is also amazingly beautiful. Take a look at these beeswax candles we made a few years ago. You can get your beeswax candle kit here!

Homemade Gift Tags

Gift tags are a great way to unleash some creativity and create a practical item that can be used for the Christmas season. I especially love this tutorial for creating upcycled Christmas gift tags.

Christmas Ornaments

God's Eye Christmas Ornament

The first handicraft I would suggest for kids is making Christmas ornaments. Even the youngest of children can play a part in making ornaments. Here are a few ideas:

Buy clear plastic ornaments and make a handprint ornament. Children could also paint Christmas trees or snowmen onto ornaments.

Make salt dough ornaments and use cookie cutters to cut them out.

Hot glue popsicle sticks in an upside down triangle and add a red nose and googly eyes for a Rudolph ornament.

Finally, you can help your children create the God’s Eye Christmas ornaments you see in the picture above.

Bake Cookies

My last suggestion for a Christmas ornament is simple, yet the skill is wonderful and will definitely create memories. My kids love Christmas baking. This year we have already prepared gingerbread cookies using this recipe. We love our gingerbread cookie cutters.

Of course you can make just about any sort of cookie recipe you’d like, or you can make another sweet treat. Peppermint bark makes an amazing gift and one we will be bringing to family this year!
