I absolutely love creating handicraft projects and then getting to share them with you! This series has been so much fun to do with my kids, and we have made some lovely decorations and gifts for Christmas. Today’s handicraft is a simple DIY dried orange garland. I’ll also add a few scented pinecones and cinnamon sticks for a delicious smelling Christmas garland decoration!

How do you make orange garland?

The process for drying orange slices is very simple, but it does require you to be home while the orange slices are drying for several hours.

I used three oranges and sliced them to about 1 cm thickness. These oranges made enough slices for one pinecone garland with 9 slices and several extra for ornaments.

preparing oranges to dry

I used a regular 9″ x 13″ baking sheet and placed foil over the baking sheet. I then used a cookie rack over the baking sheet and placed all of my orange slices on that.

I placed the baking sheet with oranges in an oven preheated to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. My plan was to dry the oranges in the oven for four hours, turning the oranges each hour. It worked out really well. The oranges were still a little gummy at the end of the drying time, but after being hung they continued to dry out.

To make the dried orange garland, I used hemp twine I purchased from Walmart along with scented pinecones and cinnamon sticks.

First, I made the pinecones “hangable” by cutting small pieces of twine and tying them around the pinecones so that there were two long pieces left to tie around the main garland.

I then used a small poker tool from an old pumpkin carving kit to poke two holes in the top of the orange slices. I strung one pinecone on the garland followed by three slices, another pinecone, a cinnamon stick, another pinecone, three more orange slices, pinecone, cinnamon stick, pinecone, and finally three more slices and a pinecone.

How long does a dried orange garland last?

Your dried orange garland will last you all season. If stored in a cool. dry place you may be able to use your dried fruit garland for an additional year.

I really love the addition of the scented pinecones because they really help the garland smell wonderful! P.S. the dried oranges also smell pretty awesome while they are drying in the oven. It’s time to make the whole house smell like Christmas!

How do you make dried orange ornaments?

I’m planning to turn the leftover dried orange slices into ornaments. All you have to do to make dried orange ornaments is poke a small hole in the top of the slice and use either a hook or some more twine tied in a loop. It’ll look so cute!
