Easy Homemade French Bread Recipe
Let’s start with the ingredients for our homemade French bread. You will need:
2 1/4 tsp. yeast
1/4 tsp. sugar
1/4 cup warm water
1/2 Tbsp. salt
1 cup hot water
1 1/2 Tbsp. sugar
1/4 cup oil
2 1/2 – 3 cups all-purpose flour
- Begin by combining the yeast, 1/4 tsp. sugar, and 1/4 cup warm water in a bowl to activate the yeast.
- Using a stand mixer, add hot water, sugar, salt, oil, and 1 1/2 cups flour. Mix well and add yeast mixture.
- Slowly add in remaining flour while dough is mixing.
- Once the dough is well incorporated, cover the bowl and let it rise for 1 hour. The dough will be sticky at this point.
- Once dough has risen, remove from bowl onto a floured surface. Divide the dough in half.
- Roll out each half of dough into a rectangle.
- Roll up the dough jelly-roll style and place seam-side down on a greased pan.
- Slit the top of the loaves and apply an egg wash for a crunchier crust. (1 egg and a little bit of water whisked together will create your egg wash).
- Let loaves rise for 30 minutes, covered.
- Bake in 400 degree oven for 25 minutes.
While the bread is baking, make your garlic cheese spread.
Garlic Cheese Spread Recipe for the best French Bread Recipe Ever!
- Begin with 1 8 oz. block of cream cheese and 1 stick of butter, softened.
- Using a mixer, whip the cream cheese and butter together.
- Add the garlic and herbs. I do 2 pressed garlic cloves, 2 tsp. garlic salt, 1/2 Tbsp. oregano, and 1/2 Tbsp. chives.
- Incorporate all of the ingredients and store in a covered bowl in the refrigerator. If it sits overnight, the flavors will be better combined, but you can eat it immediately, too!
So, now you have this amazing homemade French bread, and the perfect garlic cheese spread, what main dish are you going to pair with it?
My husband’s favorite go-to meal is STOUFFER’S® Meat Lover’s Lasagna. I used to make homemade lasagna, but I found out in a round-about way that he just prefers STOUFFER’S®, so that’s what we have when we have lasagna night! The Meat Lover’s Lasagna is very similar to the STOUFFER’S® lasagna we all grew up with, but it has delicious Italian Sausage, ground beef, and pepperoni added in. It’s a meat-lover’s dream! We purchase the family size at Walmart in the family meals freezer section.
Even my kids adore this lasagna. The baby gobbles it up!
Once I set our table with the STOUFFER’S® Meat Lover’s Lasagna and French bread, I whip together a quick olive oil dip. I just put a few herbs on a plate. This time I used oregano, chives, and a bit of garlic salt. Then I pour on some olive oil, add a little parmesan cheese, and a couple of teaspoons of red wine vinegar. This olive oil dip is super easy and so good if you like dipping your bread!
I make this meal for my family almost weekly.
Don’t be afraid to make your own homemade bread for your meals. It’s simpler than you think, and honestly, the more you make it, the easier it becomes! And your house will smell amazing!
