As the homeschool year winds down, many of us start looking ahead and we get excited about homeschool planning. New curriculum catalogs arrive in the mail. Instagram is buzzing with planners and book stacks. And our minds start dreaming up the perfect homeschool year.

But before you plan anything for next year, I want to encourage you to pause and ponder some homeschool reflection questions.

Reflection is the quiet, grace-filled work of looking back so we can move forward with clarity and confidence. It’s how we plant the seeds for a homeschool year that is life-giving, sustainable, and joyful.

Why Reflection Matters in Homeschooling

It’s tempting to skip this step and dive straight into planning. But just like a gardener checks the soil before planting, we need to examine the heart of our homeschool. What’s thriving? What needs nourishing? What’s ready to be cleared away?

When we reflect, we can plan from our mistakes and wins, not from pressure or perfectionism.

Invite Your Kids to Reflect, Too

Reflection isn’t just for us as parents. Our children are full participants in their own learning. Asking them thoughtful questions helps them feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Here are some simple questions you can ask your homeschooled children:

    Learning & Growth

    • What is something new you learned this year that you’re proud of?
    • What subject was the most interesting to you and why?
    • What was really hard for you?

    Favorites & Feelings

    • Was there anything about school you didn’t like?
    • What was your favorite book, project, or activity this year?
    • When did you feel excited or confident about learning?

    Looking Ahead

    • What would you love to learn next year?
    • Is there something you wish we did more (or less) of?
    • What would you change if you were in charge?

    For Younger Kids

    • What was your favorite thing we did this year?
    • What made you happy?
    • What was hard?
    • What do you want to learn about next?

You might be surprised by what they say. Sometimes their favorite moments are the ones we didn’t even notice!

    Planning From Peace, Not Pressure

Once you’ve reflected, then begin to plan. And plan from a place of honesty and peace, not comparison or hustle.

The goal isn’t to do more. It’s to do what matters in a way that fits your unique family.

I’d love to hear from you!
