I always love when I can quickly whip up some DIY natural cleaners. If they use simple ingredients that I likely have on hand, I’m all for them. One of my secret go-to DIY cleaning recipes is this homemade carpet deodorizer that I’m going to share with you today. I’ve been using this simple recipe for years. I’m also going to offer a few different twists on the original recipe, too!

How To Make Carpet Freshener with Bicarbonate of Soda
This is the original recipe I use, and it’s so incredibly simple. I simple fill up a quart mason jar about 3/4 of the way with baking soda, and then I add at least 20 drops of essential oil. My favorite essential oil to use is lavender.
Baking soda is definitely one product you want to keep on hand because it can be used in so many different homemade cleaning recipes. It’s naturally an amazing deodorizer. I use it as a base when dealing with urine stains on mattresses, in a bowl to soak up stinky fridge odors, and so much more!
Using the baking soda in your homemade carpet freshener will soak up all the yucky odors in your carpet or upholstery. The added essential oils will refresh the fabric and give off a pleasant odor when you vacuum.
If you have pets or children, you definitely want to make sure whatever essential oil you use is pet and kid safe. Plant Therapy is my go-to essential oil company because they make clear which oils are safe for kids and pets.

- 5 drops juniper berry
- 10 drops ginger
- 7 drops lemon
- 7 drops orange
- 10 drops lemon

How To Make Carpet Deodorizer with Cinnamon
Did you ever consider making your homemade carpet freshener with cinnamon? Be warned, only use this recipe on dark carpets and fabrics. Light fabrics may get stained.
Cinnamon is such a comforting smell, and this recipe is great to try during the fall and winter months.
This homemade carpet deodorizer with borax recipe is a little different than just my baking soda recipe. The borax works as a human safe insect killer, so if you think you may have an issue with dust mites or other critters in your carpet, you can add the borax to your DIY carpet freshener recipe.
- 1 cup borax
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon (or other dried, crushed herbs like rosemary or lavender)
- Essential oils of your choice (optional)
To keep things simple, I use my quart size mason jar with an old Parmesan cheese can lid. The holes in the lid are great for sprinkling the DIY carpet refresher around.
To use the DIY carpet freshener, sprinkle on carpet and upholstery, let sit for 20 minutes, and then vacuum it all up! Your home will smell great and the yucky smells in your carpet and upholstery will be neutralized!
