Welcome to Day 1 of the 5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials blog hop! Let’s get started!
You can’t have a homeschool without homeschool bookshelves! When we were looking for our new home I knew one of the rooms downstairs in this house would make the perfect schoolroom. It had built-in bookshelves! The only thing I wish was different was that they were a little taller because I have to lay several of our books on their sides. It’s okay, though! We have several books for all ages. I just love books!
The bookshelves in the schoolroom hold some of our children’s books. Everything from baby board books to the books we are using this year for our kindergarten curriculum. Favorite books do end up getting moved all throughout the house, but when we are done with them, they go right back on the shelves. We still have plenty of room to add more books as we progress in our homeschool journey!
I also keep toys on the shelves. We have our Wedgits, Stacker Pegs, and kitchen play food on the shelves for easy access.
As our book collection grows, I am going to put in my request for a larger bookshelf unit. I think something like the Expedit Room Divider would be a good fit for our schoolroom. My husband is a carpenter when he’s not working for the military, so he will probably rather build me something like this rather than buy it.
I have another smaller bookcase just outside the schoolroom that holds all of my classics and books from my literature studies. (I majored in English.) My husband actually built this for me a long time ago. We still need to paint it, but I just love it for my books.
If you have bookshelves, you need good books to put on them! We believe in quality literature and we are slowly adding to our collection. I have shared our must-read preschool book list, favorite books for toddlers, and our favorite family read-alouds.
Every year for Christmas I make sure to buy the kids at least one great book to add to our collection. In years past they have gotten The Complete Tales of Winnie the Pooh, Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales, Madeline, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, Curious George box set, various children’s Bible storybooks, and several Little Golden books.
Luke and I love to go to antique stores. I am particularly fond of perusing their book selections to find little treasures for cheap! Thrift stores like the Goodwill and others are also good for hunting down classic books. Of course, you can’t really go in looking for a specific book, but you might find something surprising to add to your bookshelves!
What are some of your favorite books on your bookshelves?
