Last weekend I had a bit of a snafu in my oven. I have started a new tradition in our home of choosing a new dessert to make every Sunday. On this particular Sunday I chose to bake a peach cobbler, but I made the mistake of filling my cast iron skillet with too much batter. I ended up with burnt cobbler all over the bottom of my oven. It was bad! I tried EasyOff and didn’t really make a dent in the mess. I ended up using baking soda to clean the oven and it worked! Here are my best cleaning tips for how to clean your oven with baking soda!

How do you clean an oven with baking soda?

There are a few methods you can use to clean your oven with baking soda. It won’t be a quick method, but with a little patience, you can avoid the fumes of nasty chemical cleaners since you are using natural baking soda.

Here’s my basic recipe for the best homemade oven cleaner:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1 TBSP. salt
  • Enough water to make a paste

Mix enough water into your baking soda and salt to form a nice paste. In your completely cool oven, use a rubber spatula to spread the past all over the burnt on bits of your oven. Allow the paste to sit overnight.

The next day, use a scrub sponge to wipe away the grime. Rinse with a clean sponge until all traces of grime and baking soda are removed.

How do I get burnt stuff off the bottom of my oven?

To get the really burnt stuff off the bottom of the oven, I poured white distilled vinegar in a cup and poured it over the baking soda paste right before I wiped the baking soda out of the oven. I then used a wooden spatula to scrape away the burnt on food that would not come off with wiping.

It worked really well for me and got almost all of the burnt on mess off of my oven. I will need to do one more application to remove the last of the burnt on grime, but I was definitely impressed with how well the baking soda worked.

How do you clean an oven with baking soda and lemon?

Another option you can try to clean your oven is to use the same basic recipe above, except sprinkle lemon juice over the top of the baking soda before you wipe out the oven. You can even use a lemon half to help you scrub at the oven.

Another option is to use some soapy water to clean out your oven when you scrub after the baking soda has set. I like to squirt a little Dawn dish soap in some warm water and use a scrubber sponge to work off the grime.

I do want to caution you to be careful with this method if you have a self cleaning oven. Using anything to clean self cleaning ovens could damage the coating. Make sure you read your owner’s manual before you try to tackle your oven cleaning by hand!
