How To Create Cozy Corners in Your Small House

One of the hardest things for me to figure out while living in this house was how to make it feel like ours. We are currently living in a rental home while my husband finishes his time at this current duty station. It was so hard to leave our much larger home, but we had to do what we had to do in order to keep our family together.

Some people actually look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them we had trouble finding a rental when we moved in 2022, but honestly we were lucky to get what we got at the time. We are no strangers to having a large family in a small house, so I knew we could make it work even if it wasn’t necessarily what I wanted. Plus, we still have four bedrooms so our kids have plenty of space in their rooms.

Since the layout of this house in particular is really kind of awkward with a small kitchen and a large open space right off of it that is the living and dining rooms, I decided to break down the spaces into cozy corners.

Creating a Play Corner

We really needed a dedicated spot where our youngest kids could play in the main living space. I decided to make this little corner next to the window work for that purpose. The first thing we did was put down a road rug to anchor the space.

We already had several house plants over there, so we decided to keep them there. This spot is really the only spot in the main living area that gets a good amount of natural light.

Currently, we use this corner for the kids’ Bluey toys. We have amassed quite the collection. We will occasionally rotate toys in and out of this space to keep it fresh.

We have this bookshelf next to the corner. I’m actually still working on the corner on the other side of the bookshelf, but we keep decor, books, and a bin for miscellaneous toys on this shelf.

Creating a Reading Corner

Since I gave up an entire room dedicated to my library at my other house, I knew I needed somewhere to keep our books. I have loved creating reading nooks in most of our homes, so making one just for me was a no brainer!

This is by no means all of our book collection, but it’s a good chunk. We got the bookshelf from Facebook Marketplace, and I bought this chair when my last baby was born. It’s now my reading chair.

I love having a dedicated space for my Mother’s Morning Basket. I keep my Bible, journals, prayer books, and my watercolors and watercolor book here. It’s such a cozy spot.

I also really love vintage pictures. This one came from my Nana and I just love it!

As you can tell, we really love plants! This ivy adds the perfect touch of life to my little, cozy reading nook!

Bedside Corner

I had to create a little corner next to my side of the bed, too. Here I have my nightstand, my LED touch lamp, my full-length mirror, and pictures that I love. Of course, I have a plant here, too. This is a snake plant that has gotten huge!

For now, I’m working on creating a couple of corners in our main living space. I just need to find the right decor for them. We have a music section with our piano, an early learning corner, another little reading nook, and a nook for our homeschool supplies. It’s definitely a work in progress!

I haven’t been able to find a good space for my own little office, but I loved this office nook in one of our previous houses!

(The ‘ivy’ that sits atop your beautiful reading nook bookcase, is a Pothos;) The trailers can be pinched off, rooted in a glass of water, then potted as new additional plants!😃 I’m all about ‘free’ plants!ðŸŠī💰)
