Anyone else dread teaching math in your homeschool? I know it’s not just me. Math has never been my subject, and it’s been one that I have really had to dig deep and research some different methods to figure out how to teach it to my kids. Let’s make math fun for elementary school kids with a variety of activities!
Making Math Fun for Kids 1st-5th Grade
If you’re looking for ways to make math fun for your kids, you’ve come to the right place! Young children especially can learn math in a variety of ways. Here are some of our favorites!
Math Dice – This fun mental math game is great for kids ages six and up. This game involves rolling the dice and using them to add or subtract to equal the number on the target die!
This super fun game is fast paced and will help your learners practice all math facts!
Easter Egg Math Puzzles – These free math puzzles help kids practice making a 10!
Color By Number Worksheets – We absolutely love color by number worksheets for a variety of ages!
Bring Math To Life
Let your child help you figure out the best price on items at the grocery store, calculate the total of an item if a coupon is used, or let your child help you calculate the family budget.
Money is a pretty big part of life. One way you can help your child is by giving an allowance and letting him purchase things on his own.
Ask your child math related questions. Let your child divide his sandwich in half. Have him figure out how many M&Ms each child would get if he split the package with his two siblings. Let her figure out how many eggs to add to the recipe when you double it. There are a variety of ways to bring math to life in everyday situations.
Fun Math Books
Of course I can’t leave out books since I am a book loving mama!
Life of Fred series – I use this series with my kids to supplement their math skills. Each chapter is fun and engaging!
The Boy Who Loved Math – Do you think of mathematicians as solitary beings locked away somewhere with a chalkboard? Read about the remarkable life of Paul Edros with this book!
So many girls think they are bad at math. Inspire your daughter with the story of Raye Montague.
Ready to teach your child about Infinity? This book has some nice concepts to help it come to life.
