When it comes to large family living, I have found a cleaning routine is absolutely essential to keeping the house in order. Not only do I have a house full of young kids, but I am also a homeschool mom, so I have all my kids home with me all day. Most days we are home all day long. Today, I am going to walk you through my afternoon cleaning routine as part of our large family cleaning schedule so you can see how I keep the house somewhat clean while running our homeschool day!

Large Family Cleaning Schedule

Our afternoon cleaning routine begins after we do our morning time and history/science subjects. We usually end those subjects right around lunch time. We all eat lunch together and then the kids put away their lunch dishes and begin rest time/nap time. I do have a few chores to get done myself during this time just to keep our household on track.

Afternoon Cleaning Routine

The first thing I usually do is switch the laundry. I’ll fold the laundry that comes out of the dryer and then put another load in. I typically wash 2-3 loads of laundry these days. I start a load in the morning, do my afternoon switch, and another load in the evening.

Once I finish folding the laundry and switching it out, I will move to the dishes. The kids are responsible for unloading the dishwasher during their morning routine, so all I have to do is load it with our breakfast and lunch dishes and run the load. If I am able to get that done, we are able to unload dishes before we eat dinner so the dishwasher can be loaded with the dinner dishes.

The last part of my afternoon cleaning routine is just to do any tidying that needs to be done. I’ll wipe down counters, wipe the stovetop, and do a quick sweep in the main area of the house. Usually by this time I am ready for my own rest time before we begin our afternoon rotations of school which usually include language arts and math.

On Fridays, our afternoon routine morphs into our weekly cleaning routine where we do more deep cleaning. We don’t do afternoon rotations for homeschool on Friday, so we have more time to work together to do a bit of dusting and bathroom cleaning. I also try to work on my zone cleaning during this time.

Here’s a recap of my afternoon cleaning routine:

  • Switch and fold laundry
  • Load and run dishwasher from breakfast and lunch dishes
  • Wipe down counters and table
  • Sweep the floors
