What if I told you an entire digital media library full of educational videos and games existed online for homeschoolers? Your child could have access to documentaries on a wide variety of subjects, all types of music, and fun games that can be accessed on any device. SmartKidz Media has created SmartKidz Media Library for Homeschoolers. We recently got the opportunity to review the Media Library.
What is the SmartKidz Media Library for Homeschoolers?
The SmartKidz Media Library is a digital library that the entire family can enjoy. There are games, documentaries, digital eBooks, and even music. You can learn about anything from the solar system to your favorite animals. The selection of educational digital media is large!
Each theme is organized in such a way that you can pick what you want to learn about. There’s Animals and Wildlife, Documentaries and Culture, Health & Fitness, History, Lifestyles & Cuisine, Science, Travel & Adventure, Fine Art, Classical Music, Cultural Music, Jazz & Blues, and even Relaxation Music. You will also find flash animated eBooks that include great classics like Mother Goose and Beatrix Potter books. There are even Bible Stories and Songs!
You will also find a Baby Sign Language section, an Animal family program for the animal lovers in your house, study guides for subjects like Shakespeare and math, a special needs section, a living skills section, a Ready, Set, Sing! section, and a Fun Zone.
The Media Library can be viewed on any device. You do need a working Internet connection to use this program because you will be streaming the content.
How we used the SmartKidz Media Library
There are so many ways you can use the media library. We started with the videos. I chose the very first section, Animals and Wildlife. We viewed the Animal Journey programs, as well as the Nature’s Miniatures programs. The programs were high quality and very fascinating for all of us! We learned about the journey of whales and butterflies. We got to get up close and personal with all kinds of bugs!
I also set my kids up to use the Mighty eBook Collection. My kids are all age six and under, and the eBook collection was perfect for all of them. I was very surprised to see several of our favorites! Some of the available eBooks are Aesop’s Fables, Beatrix Potter tales, and The Real Mother Goose. There are also reading readiness books, science books, books divided by ages from 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8, and there are even Bible Stories and Song books!
Want to know my kids’ favorite section? The Fun Zone! My two year old and four year old were literally fighting over who got to use the computer to play these games. My two year old loves the “Find the Hidden Treasure Game.” In this game, a picture is presented with several “hidden” objects. The outline of each object your child is to find is at the top of the game. You have to click on the object when you find it and drag it to the outline. He LOVES this game!
My daughter’s favorite game is called “Dress the Divas.” There are three “Rock Stars” shown at the beginning of the game. You’re supposed to study what they are wearing and then use your memory to dress them exactly as they were dressed at the beginning of the game.
Do we recommend SmartKidz Media?
For $10 a month or $99 a year, I think SmartKidz Media is a great value for homeschoolers. I was able to use my computer and iPhone to view the materials. When I wanted to play a documentary on TV, I ended up using my Apple TV to stream from my iPhone to the television. The only problem I ran into was trying to play the games on my iPhone. They would not work.
That said, there is so much here to supplement almost anything you’re studying in your homeschool. I personally love the eBook collection. My kids can listen to The Real Mother Goose and Beatrix Potter! There’s lots of stuff geared toward young kids, but there’s also stuff for older children. The documentaries on history and culture look excellent. I think this is a great supplement and could even be used in a co-op setting.
