9th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices 2025-2026

It’s hard to believe I’m officially homeschooling a high schooler! This year is a big milestone for our family as we step into the high school years with my 9th grader. I spent a lot of time researching curriculum and we’ve landed on a mix that I think combines the Charlotte Mason philosophy I love so much with some college prep courses.

Here’s what we’re using for 9th grade this year:

Religion

Mater Amabilis changed up how they do religion courses for high school, but I really like the change. My daughter will be taking The Foundations of Our Catholic Faith which includes:

• Bible in a Year with Father Mike Schmitz
• Encyclical – Deus Caritas Est, Pope Benedict XVI
• Mater Amabilis Religion Readings Volume 1: The Early Church
• Spiritual Reading: The Creed in Slow Motion, Knox

Literature

For high school English my daughter is taking the Classical Epics and Early British Literature Honors Course. She will be reading:

• The British Tradition I by Memoria Press
• Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
• Canterbury Tales, Chaucer
• Great Myths of the World, Colum
• The Iliad, Homer
• The Odyssey, Homer
• The Aeneid, Vergil
• Beowulf
• She will be taking writing classes from Homeschool Connections, and she will do Shakespeare study with the family.

History

Mater Amabilis high school history course is a three year study. For Level 5 Year 1 the course will cover Ancient History to the End of the Roman Empire, British History to the Tudors, and Church History to the End of the Roman Empire. These are the books she will be reading:

• A Short History of the World, Roberts
• A History of the English Speaking Peoples, Churchill
• The Catholic Church Through The Ages, Vidmar

Health

We also do the Mater Amabilis Health course, which is a two year study. This year my daughter will be reading:

• Ourselves, Charlotte Mason
• The Omnivore’s Dilemma Young Reader Edition, Pollan
• The Worry Workbook for Teens
• Atomic Habits by James Clear
• We will likely use the P.E. course from 7 Sisters, as well

Geography

This year my daughter will study the Geography of Africa with A Living High School Geography. She will read The Lost Dinosaurs of Egypt, A Long Walk to Water, and Cry, the Beloved Country.

Government/Civics/Economics

My daughter is taking American Government and Economics I from Mater Amabilis. She’ll be reading:

• Plutarch’s Lives, Plutarch
• Ourselves, Charlotte Mason
• Whatever Happened to Penny Candy, Maybury
• Are You Liberal, Conservative, or Confused, Maybury
• Animal Farm, Orwell

Science

I’m so excited to use Journey Homeschool Academy again this year. My daughter will be taking the Experience Biology course with a lab, of course.

Math

We decided to go back to Teaching Textbooks this year and my daughter will be taking Geometry.

Homeschool Connections Courses

Finally, we use Homeschool Connections for a variety of courses. In addition to the writing courses I mentioned earlier in the post, my daughter will be taking Speech Communications and Spanish I.

She will do morning time with us every morning which includes, Shakespeare, poetry, song, artist study, composer study, a family religion study, and current events. I think she’s going to have a great year!
