After I had my fifth baby in April, I realized that if I wanted to be able to keep up with my gaggle of kiddos, I was going to have to start focusing on myself a little more. Pregnancy is hard on me both physically and emotionally. I inevitably fall into a trap where I just don’t care much about taking care of myself anymore. Around three months postpartum, I find myself coming out of that pregnancy and newborn haze, and now I’m ready to start focusing on myself again so I can be the best mama I can be. Here are the things I’m doing to care for myself postpartum and get the “old me” back.

5 Ways to Take Care of Yourself Postpartum

How To Care for Yourself Postpartum

Drink Enough Water

Water in a glass

I’m a horrible water drinker. I really do have to remind myself and force myself to drink it. Since I am breastfeeding, it is even more imperative that I drink the recommended eight cups of water every day. If I don’t drink water throughout the day, I will feel completely parched at night.

Take My Adult Vitamins

Adult gummy vitamins

Remembering to take my vitamins is another thing I’ve never been so good at. I just recently found Sundown Naturals® adult GUMMY vitamins at Walmart. Who knew that adults could take gummy vitamins, too? My kids love their gummies, and now I have my own. I decided to get a bottle of Biotin for my skin, hair, and nails, and I also picked up a bottle of calcium because my doctor told me I needed to take extra calcium since I am breastfeeding, and technically, I have been pregnant and/or nursing for the past six years! If you’re interested in knowing what vitamins you should take, you can take a short quiz here. Sundown Naturals® are gluten and dairy free and they also contain no artificial flavors. Pretty cool!

Family Walks

Since we live on base now, I have discovered there are at least three park areas within walking distance from our house. I load my babies up in the stroller and the big kids ride their bikes and hubby and I head off to explore. Not only is walking great exercise, but we are getting to spend time together as a family. I love it. We are making memories here. The fresh air also does a lot for my mood. I always feel refreshed and happy when we come home.

A Little Pampering

I’m not good at pampering myself, but when I do take the time to do it, I feel so much better. I’ve started doing my nails again (Yay for being able to reach my toes!), and keeping up with my hair color. I will pamper myself with a new makeup purchase here and there. Since I’m a stay at home mom, it can be tempting to stay in PJ’s all day, but I’ve started to make sure when I get up I get dressed and ready for the day. It does so much for my mood.

Hobbies

As a new mama, it can be so difficult to make time for hobbies. I love to read, and I homeschool, so I love to read my homeschooling books. I have started working reading back into my daily life. Instead of mindlessly scrolling through Facebook while I’m nursing, I’ll read a chapter in a book. I feel so accomplished when I actually finish a book I start!
