I’ve written a lot on this blog about how I have always been hesitant when it came to how to homeschool math. As a mom who does not naturally enjoy math, I knew that I needed to seek out homeschool math curriculum that would actually help me teach my children. A math book alone just wasn’t going to cut it. Today we’re going to talk about homeschool math curriculum online, how I prepare my children to start an online math program, how I teach online math, and other ways that we practice math here at home.
Disclaimer: Thank you to Teaching Textbooks for sponsoring this post. As always, all opinions are my own.

As a homeschooling parent, I know that math is best taught with a hands-on approach during the early years. This is why I specifically wait until my kids are in 2nd-3rd grades before introducing them to online math.
During the preschool years we do a lot of counting in our everyday life.
I’ll ask my child, “How many balls do you have? Let’s count them, one, two.”
I love to use objects to practice counting at this age. Blocks, stuffed animals, cups, spoons, etc. all make great objects to practice counting!
There’s a lot of repetition, but I want them to understand one-to-one correspondence at this age.
We also work on rote counting just by reciting the numbers in order.
When my children move into kindergarten, I will use math workbooks to help me teach them basic addition and subtraction, as well as even and odd numbers, grouping numbers, and counting money.
We also use a lot of math manipulatives and math games to help make math fun and to practice these math skills during our math lessons.
I think no matter if you plan to choose an online homeschool math program for your children, you should begin with a hands-on math approach until kids are around seven to eight years old.
Best Homeschool Online Math Curriculum
Once my kids reach the 2nd or 3rd grade level, I move them into our favorite online math curriculum, Teaching Textbooks.
I knew that homeschooling math online was going to be our best option for teaching and learning more complicated math problems like multiplication, division, fractions, and definitely math concepts beyond that. I needed to figure out how to choose homeschool math curriculum.
Teaching Textbooks offers a placement test so you can see in which level your child should begin. So, if you’re coming from public school, the placement test will be helpful. Teaching Textbooks begins with Math 3 and goes all the way up to Pre-Calculus. I’ll soon have a high school student, so these higher level math options are great for us! You can read even more about the curriculum and how much we love it in my honest Teaching Textbooks review.
Is Teaching Textbooks the Best Online Math Curriculum?
When it comes to choosing the best homeschool math curriculum, Teaching Textbooks wins for our family. It offers video lessons and interactive math problems. The best part about this program, it’s actually an app and you don’t need an Internet connection every time your child does math. You can download some lessons when you know you won’t be around an Internet connection, but you can also rest assured that all of your student’s work is saved on Teaching Textbooks servers when you are connected to the Internet.
One feature of Teaching Textbooks that I love is that if students don’t get math problems right the first time, they are allowed to try again.
As a homeschool mom, I enjoy the spiral approach and that my kids are continually practicing concepts because let’s face it, if you don’t use it you’re probably going to lose it.
I love that Teaching Textbooks is an online math curriculum that can be used on a computer or a mobile device like the iPad.
Teaching Textbooks is the best fit for us because it works so well for homeschooling multiple ages. I am currently homeschooling five kids, and three are now using Teaching Textbooks. The independence fostered by the program means that my kids can work on their math with as little or as much help from me as they need. I don’t need to be present for the entire lesson.

My kids enjoy many of the features of Teaching Textbooks. They like choosing their own math “buddy” and wallpaper. A couple of my kids enjoy the extra challenge of the bonus rounds.
The great thing about Teaching Textbooks is that it’s completely customizable. So, if your child doesn’t like the sound effects and animation, you can turn those off. You can turn off the hints and second chances, too.
Because my kids are competitive, they also enjoy seeing who can get the highest grade in math, which may or may not be a good thing, but Teaching Textbooks does all of the grading for me!
My children are also able to move at their own pace, which is great. If they need more practice with certain concepts, I am able to go into the program and allow them to try practice problems again.
Tips for Homeschooling Math Online
If you’ve decided to homeschool with an online math program, I do think that you should follow some tips and not just set your child loose with an online math curriculum completely on their own. As the homeschooling parent, you are still the teacher and you still need to keep up with what your child is doing.
- Choose a schedule for completing math lessons.
- Provide a way for children to work problems. My oldest son prefers pencil and paper for working problems, so I buy him spiral notebooks just for math. Teaching Textbooks offers a Scratchpad feature that works especially well on the iPad, so my kids can work out the math problems right on the screen.
- Be available to help. While my kids could do all of the lessons completely on their own, I know I need to be available to help when my kids are having trouble. The great thing about Teaching Textbooks is if I’m a little rusty I can watch the video lesson to refresh my memory so I can accurately help my kids.
- Check your child’s progress. Teaching Textbooks sends me an email every day when work is completed. I’m able to see which lesson they completed, what their score is, how much time they have left to complete the course, as well as their overall course average.
- Talk with your child about their math lessons. The best way to gauge if your child is really understanding their math is to talk to them about it! Communication is key.
- Make sure your child is practicing math in regular life. For many of us, this is where we will use our math skills most as adults. Involve your children in cooking and measuring. Make sure you allow your children to handle money so they learn how to count it properly. Look for lots of opportunities to practice those math skills!
When it comes to homeschooling math online, I decided to choose a trusted program that has been used by other homeschoolers. I’ve talked with other moms who have used Teaching Textbooks and many of us absolutely love it. The new Teaching Textbooks app makes homeschooling math online and off even easier.
