You’ve made the decision to start homeschooling your kids! That’s fabulous news and half the battle. Now, you have to decide what is going to be the best family style homeschool curriculum. If you have more than one child, choosing a homeschool curriculum that works for the entire family will save you time and money. Today I am going to share with you a variety of family style curricula so you can make the best decision for your family!

Each new school year is almost like Christmas for the homeschool mom. Planning for the homeschool year is so much fun. I love sifting through homeschool catalogs and reading homeschool curriculum reviews. I love dreaming about all the wonderful things we will be learning together.

Since we have a large family of seven kids, it has been important to me to find a curriculum that will allow me to teach multiple ages. Today, I’m going to share with you a variety of one room schoolhouse style homeschool curriculum. Some of these we have used, some of them we haven’t, but I realize that the best homeschool curriculum for me, may not be the best for you! Yay for choices!

Family Style Homeschool Curriculum Options

My Father’s World

Our family has used and loved My Father’s World homeschool Curriculum since 2012. I have used their various programs with all of my children. This curriculum is awesome for large Christian homeschool families because the entire curriculum has a focus on God.

I have done extensive reviews of almost every aspect of My Father’s World, and I’m adding more and more reviews every year!

Subjects Covered – My Father’s World is broken down into three main themes that follow along with the classical approach to homeschooling. The DISCOVER theme encompasses preschool to 2nd grade and includes everything you need to teach – even language arts and math. School times are short and littles are taught separately from older children.

The INVESTIGATE theme follows a five year history cycle for kids in 3rd-8th grade. Children are taught together for most subjects, but language arts and math are done independently, as well as science for 7th and 8th graders.

The DECLARE theme is for high schoolers and is meant to be independent for the child with the parent acting as a guide.

My Father’s World offers curriculum for ALL subjects.

Grades Covered – Preschool to 12th grade

Price – Curriculum packages range in price from $296 to over $600, but keep in mind most materials can be passed down from child to child, and the INVESTIGATE packages will likely be reused.

Parent Involvement – Parental involvement is very heavy until high school, but parents are still required to act as a guide and keep up with grades.

Secular or Christian – Christian

Digital or Physical Product – My Father’s World offers only physical products.

Sonlight

Sonlight is probably one of the most popular homeschool curriculum options. It is a literature based curriculum that works across multiple subjects. I have personally never used Sonlight, but found this Sonlight homeschool curriculum review helpful to understand how the curriculum works.

Sonlight does break down their curriculum packages by grade, but they also include an age-range so that students close in age can be taught together. They offer a Sonlight curriculum advisor who will help you figure out how to combine multiple students.

Subjects Covered – Sonlight offers all-subjects curriculum packages, which include history, bible, geography, Read-Alouds, Readers, language arts, handwriting (early grades), spelling (middle grades), math, and science.

Grades Covered – Sonlight covers preschool to high school.

Price – Packages range from $350 for preschool packages to over $1,000 for high school packages.

Parent Involvement – Parents are very involved in teaching this curriculum.

Secular or Christian – Christian – Scripture is included

Digital or Physical Product – Sonlight is a physical product.

Lifepac

If you’re looking for a Christian, workbook curriculum that allows you to be hands-on or off in your child’s education, Lifepac is worth a look. It is based on mastery learning, in which students master a concept before moving to the next unit. While this curriculum is not taught one room schoolhouse style, it is easier to teach multi-age students because of how it is set up. Subjects covered – Bible, history/geography, language arts, math, science, and electives are covered.

Grades covered – 1st to 12th grades

Price – The 1st grade complete subject package starts at $413.96 for 5 subjects, while the 2nd grade set is around $350. Individual workbooks are fairly inexpensive.

Parent Involvement – This curriculum does not require a lot of parent involvement.

Secular or Christian – Lifepac takes a Christian perspective.

Digital or Physical – Physical, but the workbooks are slim and very portable.

The Homeschool Garden

If you’re looking for a delightful way to add the Charlotte Mason approach to your homeschool, I highly recommend The Homeschool Garden, which can be used as a complete curriculum for early elementary students. Subjects covered – copywork; poetry; tea time; composer study and music selections; art study and art selections; handicrafts; art lessons; hymns and folk songs; weekly nature study; geography; memory work including scripture, prayer, and poetry; Shakespeare or Plutarch; recommended reading lists to compliment the session.

Grades covered – This is a full curriculum for early elementary, but can be used for children of all ages.

Price – Each session is priced at $29.99

Parent Involvement – Parents guide the children and lead discussions and narrations.

Secular or Christian – Christian

Digital or Physical – These products are digital.

The Good and the Beautiful

We used The Good and the Beautiful for a few different subjects a few years ago and I wrote several different The Good and the Beautiful reviews. Their history and science curricula can be combined across multiple grades and then you can buy grade specific math and language arts.

Subjects covered – Language arts, handwriting, history, health and science, math, and electives.

Grades covered – Preschool to 8th Grade

Price – Most course sets can be purchased for around $100 or less. Mult-subject packages are not sold, so you’ll have to put together your own package.

Parental Involvement – Parents need to be involved with this curriculum.

Secular or Christian – A Christian worldview is presented.

Digital or Physical – You can purchase digital or physical products for more of the subjects,

Bookshark

Bookshark is a complete, literature-based curriculum. It is based on levels and not grades. Because of the levels that are based on age, children within three years, which is a reasonable age range, can use the same curriculum package.

Subjects covered – History, language arts, science, math, handwriting, spelling, and electives.

Grades covered – Pre-K to ages 14-16.

Price – Most full curriculum packages seem to be in the $800 range. Single subject packages are also available.

Parental Involvement – Each package includes an in instructor’s guide, so parents will need to be involved with the curriculum.

Secular or Christian – This curriculum is secular.

Digital or Physical – Curriculum packages can be purchased as a physical package, but Bookshark also offers a virtual option.

It can definitely be difficult to homeschool multiple ages together. I have found that what works best for our large family is to combine all of our morning time subjects such as history, science, Bible, etc. and work at the kitchen table, and then break away for independent subjects such as language arts and math.

I have found that using a curriculum package that is already planned out for me really helps to make sure I tick off all of the boxes.

You may find that it takes a couple of years to find the best fit homeschool curriculum for your family, but being able to teach multiple ages together certainly makes for a much easier homeschool day.

Many of these homeschool curriculum companies offer free samples so you can try out the curriculum before making a large investment. Whatever you decide, homeschooling is an amazing experience for your family!
