I’ve told the story many times about how I began my homemaking journey. When I first got married I was clueless about the whole aspect of homemaking, and honestly, I was a young woman and the term “homemaker” seemed offensive. I quickly learned that someone has to make them home or you end up in a messy pig sty! I was on a mission to become a modern homemaker. I needed to make my home a safe refuge from the world. In today’s post I’m going to share with you some of the amazing homemaking lessons from The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer. This book will change the way you view homemaking!

What we can learn from The Hidden Art of Homemaking

Have you ever considered the art of homemaking? I heard many good things about the book The Hidden Art of Homemaking by Edith Schaeffer and knew that I needed to give it a read, and I’m so glad that I did!

I would define hidden art as the art found in the ordinary areas of everyday life. Each person has, I believe, some talent which is unfulfilled in some hidden area of his being. A talent which can be expressed and developed.

To begin, this book is for the Christian homemaker. Schaeffer begins with a chapter about the first artist, God. God created all of the beauty we see within the world. He is the ultimate artist.

There are thirteen more chapters in the book that explore various aspects of the arts and how you can apply those aspects to your homemaking.

Expressing Creativity in Your Homemaking

I want to challenge you to look at some of these areas and decide where you can express creativity in your homemaking. Maybe you have an affinity for music. Play some lovely music throughout your day. My husband loves music. We have an Apple Home Pod, so we can play music all throughout the day.

Maybe you have a talent for painting. You can display your artwork in your home.

Interior decoration is fun. It’s so nice to add little touches throughout the home. I like to decorate seasonally. I add little knick-knacks throughout the fall, and then switch them out at Christmastime, and then decorate again through Valentine’s Day, Easter, and the summer months!

Do you enjoy gardening? Plant some flowers and watch them grow! You can then add those flowers you grew to floral arrangements inside your home.

You can get creative with your food. There are so many ways you can make your meals look lovely. You can make creations with your desserts.

Writing talent can be expressed in your homemaking by writing cards to family and friends. Add some creative poetry to your letters! I specifically wrote A Homemaker’s Prayer because I enjoy writing and I thought it was a great reminder.

What about drama? Schaeffer suggests those who have an affinity for drama practicing reading aloud. We do this a lot in our homeschool and it is a great exercise in drama. You can change your voice and add excitement to make the book more entertaining!

I think it’s obvious how we can add our own creativity through recreation and planning trips, and clothing and personal style.

As far as integration, this book was written in the early 70s, and Schaeffer wanted to add that we should be open to sharing our talents with people who are different than we are.

Finally, our environment is the perfect place to express our creativity and to add in personal touches. Our environment also has an affect on how we feel. If our environment is sloppy, we feel less motivated to get work done and accomplish things. If our environment is neat, we get up in the morning and dress for the day, we are more likely to accomplish things!
