I love art. I love learning about art and I love teaching art. I may not be the best artist, but I do love admiring others artworks. I was very excited when I found out we were going to review the Early Elementary K-3, Book 2, Stories of Artists and their Art from ARTistic Pursuits, our favorite homeschool art curriculum company! I knew there was going to be lots of fun projects ahead for us!

What is ARTistic Pursuits Early Elementary Book K-3?

ARTistic Pursuits has several different homeschool art curriculum books, but for this review we are going to focus on their Early Elementary K-3 Book 2: Stories of Artists and Their Art.

This book is unique in it teaches students about several different artists, their techniques and artworks, and then gives your students a project to do that somehow relates to the artist that you just studied. This particular book is recommended for children ages 5 and up. I used it with my six year old and my four year old.

I got to introduce my kids to great artists like Giotto and Michelangelo. Each lesson lasts about 10 minutes and helps your child see a relationship between himself and the artist. There is also a fictional story for each artist that helps the child visualize what we remember each artist for. Of course, you get to introduce your child to actual works of art, too!

How We Used this Book

First, I had to order our art supplies. You can order the supplies from ARTistic Pursuits, but I chose to order ours from Amazon. Once our supplies got here, we got busy! We did art at least twice a week. I would start each lesson by reading the text to my children. We would discuss what we had read and we would look at any artwork for the artist.

Of course, my kids’ favorite activity was actually making the art! In this particular lesson, we did a watercolor of our house. I like that ARTistic Pursuits suggests high quality supplies. The water color paper we bought is very heavy duty and the watercolors are amazingly bright. I took extra care to make sure I taught my children to care for their new art supplies.

Some of our favorite activities included creating the watercolor of our house, doing scratch art with the pastels, and learning about color mixing which also happened to coincide with our unit in our regular curriculum that week.

Do I Recommend ARTistic Pursuits?

Yes! This is hands-down my favorite art curriculum. I love that the books are consumable and full of wonderful projects that even I love to do with my kids. It may seem a bit pricey at first to buy special art supplies, but your children will learn to care for their art supplies and they will create their own works of art that you can treasure forever.

I love introducing my children to Master artists through this book in particular. I want my children to appreciate all works of art and we have definitely enjoyed getting to know some wonderful artists! Yes, we recommend this book!
