One of my favorite subjects to teach my kids is astronomy. My kids have all greatly enjoyed learning about space and that probably has a lot to do with my own enthusiasm. Today I’m going to share all of the space unit study resources I’ve used to homeschool my middle kids!

Astronomy Curriculum for Homeschool

Exploring Creation with Astronomy

I used Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Astronomy as the backbone to the study. This is a full space curriculum by itself with a lot of great experiments. I used it almost in its entirety with my older three kids.

This time I decided to use it more as a tool than a full curriculum. I read aloud the chapters I wanted to cover with the kids and had them narrate in their Schoolnest Science notebooks.

We also completed a few of the easier experiments. Because we experienced a solar eclipse last year, I knew that we had already covered quite a bit of information, so I was able to pick and choose what I wanted to cover a bit more easily.

Science Unlocked – See You Around Kit

I decided to add the See You Around Kit to our space study because my kids are very interested in hands-on learning. We were able to use this kit to model rotation and orbit, we learned about moon phases with Oreos, we made a birthday star chart, and created a fun flip book to learn our place in space.

Solar System Model

I added this fun solar system model to our unit study. My kids were able to paint all of the planets in our solar system and then place them in order around the sun. This was a really fun project that now acts as decor in our homeschool space!

Moon Study Printables

Learn about the moon phases with this nature study guide and moon phases printables.

We continued our moon study with our Moon Phases printable pack. This included a fun way to track the phases of the moon with a moon journal, as well as a cut and paste page to add to our Science notebook.

I want the moon phases pack!

You can see more fun kindergarten moon activities especially for the younger kids in this blog post.

Star Gazing Activities

We purchased a telescope several years ago, and it has been a great investment. There is nothing like looking at the moon and planets up close and personal. Here are a few great options:

  • Celestron Travel Scope 70 Portable Telescope – Budget Telescope
  • Celestron StarSense Explorer DX 130AZ Smartphone App-Enabled Newtonian Reflector Telescope – Mid Budget Telescope
  • Celestron NexStar 8SE Computerized Telescope – High End Telescope

To help us identify the constellations in the night sky, we are using this star and planet locator. It came with the See You Around Kit, but you can also buy it separately.

Space-Themed Books

Space Themed Art

We love to include art in our homeschool. I love Chalkpastel.com for amazing art projects. Check out these options:
