We were out and about yesterday and I noticed something I hadn’t seen in a long time. Beautiful purple and white blossoms were blooming on several trees. I also noticed lots of little yellow daffodils dotting the landscapes of people’s yards. We’ve always had daffodils at our home, but our new house does not have any. Spring is clearly almost here.
The weather has been warmer and we have started playing outside more and enjoying lots of fun activities. The kids need to get their energy out, so I’ve been on the lookout for some new outdoor toys for our little backyard. I thought I would put together a little list for you in case you’re ready to get your backyard kid-ready for spring!
Our Favorite Outdoor Toys and Activities
Sand and Water Table
I thought I would start with our favorite outdoor toy. I bought this table in 2013 and it is still going strong. Definitely worth the $70 I paid for it. My kids have so much fun with it. Aside from using it for just plain sand and water play, we have used it for all kinds of things. We have floated paper boats in it and even had a toy car wash with it! My kids LOVE this thing!
Little Red Wagon
Where would we be without our little red wagon? This toy is awesome for toting siblings around the yard or hauling sticks and stones. My brothers and I use to race in our little red wagon. These toys are awesome and I think every kids should have one!
Swing Set
We’ve always had a plain old metal swing set in our backyard until we moved on base. There really isn’t room here for a swing set, and we have two play grounds in walking distance. I am considering getting them some sort of climber or tire swing for our back yard, though.
Sidewalk Chalk
Sidewalk chalk is cheap and versatile! We use it to play hop scotch and to even do number subtraction! I love putting sidewalk chalk in the kids’ Easter baskets. It’s definitely a staple for us all spring and summer.
Bikes and Scooters
Bikes and scooters are great for exercise and kids love them! My seven year old just learned how to ride his bike without training wheels, so that’s very exciting.
Other favorite toys I always keep on hand:
- Balls
- Bubbles
- Squirt guns
- Butterfly nets and magnifying glasses
Our Favorite Outdoor Activities for Spring
Watch Caterpillars turn into Butterflies
We did this last year and it was so fun! We probably won’t do it again this year, but we will next for, sure. Such an amazing experience!
Family Hikes
Whether it’s just a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to a local garden, family hikes are great fun. Spring is the perfect time to do them before the weather gets too unbearably hot!
Gardening
We can’t forget gardening. Almost every year we plant some sort of garden. The kids learn so much by participating with us. This past weekend my kids helped my parents with their garden and they had so much fun.
So tell me, what are some of your favorite outdoor toys and activities for spring?
Great post! So many fun activities. We love the butterflies, too.
Fantastic list! After the long winter, it is a happy time to release our energy…outside.
