Are you excited to find some Advent lesson plans to use in your homeschool? The Christmas season is definitely a favorite time of year in our home, and Advent is such a beautiful time during the liturgical year. There are many great resources available to help you plan a beautiful Advent. Today I am going to share some of my favorites.

Christmas homeschool morning basket and advent plans

Advent Calendar

The first thing we do when preparing for the Advent season is choose an Advent calendar. Most of the Advent lesson plans we use include some sort of Advent calendar or countdown, but we also really love the Advent calendars from Aldi.

I get each of my kids one chocolate Advent calendar and they only cost $1.49 each this year! We start our Christmas countdown on December 1st.

You can also find several lovely Advent calendars at Amazon if you’d rather go that route! You can find Advent calendars that offer a small toy each day, as well as candy related Advent calendars.

Advent Lesson Plan

My absolute favorite way to experience Advent with my kids is to use the resources from A Gentle Advent. There are currently four different Advent lesson plans to choose from. These lesson plans work wonderfully for your homeschool morning basket.

A Gentle Advent – The original Advent lesson plan is a Charlotte Mason-inspired Advent course- a traditional Advent morning time study combines Scripture journaling with handicrafts, music, copywork, nature study, and yummy treats to make your whole family engaged and happy throughout the season.

A Gentle Advent – Jesse Tree – These beautiful Advent journeys include Scripture, handicrafts, poetry and music study, tea times, art study, and allow you to slow down and savor the beauty of the season with your family. There are lots of hands-on activities included for those of you who love crafting and doing all of those fun hands-on things to celebrate the birth of Jesus. These are so fun in your Christmas morning basket.

I always love the way all of the A Gentle Advent lesson plans are laid out for the holiday season. There is something to do every day including bible reading. The artwork is absolutely gorgeous, the music selections are always on point, and my oldest daughter especially loves the scripture journal.

A Gentle Advent – Colonial Christmas – I think this is my favorite Advent lesson plan. If you’re studying colonial times with your kids, you’ll definitely want to check this one out for the season of Advent!

Colonial Christmas is designed to bring history to life for your students. Colonial games, poetry, art, woodworking, recipes and more will make this an Advent to remember.

Like all A Gentle Advent courses, Colonial Christmas includes a scripture journal, Advent calendar, and many fun projects that also make great gifts. We recommend this course for ages 8 and up due to the activities included.

A Gentle Advent – Further Up, Further In – This is the Advent lesson plan we are doing this year. This Advent course is geared for middle grades and high school and utilizes literature selections from The Silver Chair, The Last Battle, poetry, music, art, handicrafts, recipes, and focuses on the coming Advent of Jesus as King. Since I have a few older students this year, I think this one will be a hit!

Advent Activities for Young Children

If you have younger children in your home, you’ll definitely want to plan some fun Advent activities for them.

Since entering the Catholic church, we have started celebrating Saint Nicholas Day on December 6th. We have the kids line up their shoes by the fireplace and we fill them with chocolate coins (bought at Aldi), and they each get a little cutie or orange. You could also give each child a book or little craft to make.

I grew up celebrating Advent at church, but not so much at home. I decided to change that tradition and purchase an inexpensive Advent wreath and I purchase new Advent candles every year. We say Advent prayers every Sunday and light the corresponding candles. It’s a beautiful tradition to start with your whole family while we await the coming of Christ!

Advent Wreath Craft

Another fun way to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus is to do some fun Advent wreath crafts.

Construction Paper Advent chain – Simply make an Advent chain using read and green construction paper to countdown til Christmas.

Catholic Icing has some of the cutest Advent crafts!

One of my kids made a cute Advent wreath from cardboard and felt and battery operated tea lights at Sunday school. I thought it was the cutest little Advent wreath and such an easy craft.

Nativity Crafts

This preschool nativity printable pack is perfect for preschool!

Of course, we love celebrating Christmas with some fun nativity crafts and activities. I give my younger children our Nativity Printable Pack so they can put together their own nativity scene and do lots of fun nativity activities.

More Christmas Activities to Enjoy

I think the season leading up to Christmas Day is the absolute best time of the year. Awaiting Christ’s birth and building amazing memories and traditions with your family the entire month of December is so special.
